Retro turbo for around 3k?

But why oh why do some many Japanese people decide that what their turboed sports car needs is automatic transmission.

Usually because they do a lot of city driving in it.

I had a modified Forester S/Tb auto dropped to Impreza ride height and it was a lot of fun. I would happily own an Impreza WRX Semi-Auto.

Still miss my '91 Supra, kept it at the stock 300bhp and it was bulletproof with scary performance :)

I spent a bit of time trying to find one of these for myself. I found most of them to be full of rust and settled on a Mk4 instead. My god do i still want one!

There are loads of brilliant nostalgic cars in this thread. One day I might own one of them! Still can't beat the MX5 as for testing the water with a retro car, before moving onto something with more prestige/power!

Fiat Coupe Turbo is another option.

Ahh The "Poor Mans Ferrari"

Good Call.

But, be warned, the timing belt changes are a bit of a ballache.

The official Fiat workshop procedure involves removing the engine from the car! The "Autodata" time is just shy of 14 hours! As a consequence, depreciation-wise these tended to fall off the cliff at 6 years of age

Doable by a specialist for £400ish though. Engine mounts slackened off, engine supported + moved over a bit.

Random pic of mine :p

Which is of course why I said "Official" As you say, there are various ways around it.

There is quite a good coupe indy in High Wycombe, cant remember the name off hand though.

I was going to mention this, loved my dad's when he had the 20v 5pot turbo. Relatively retro in terms of it's power delivery and that 5pot sound!

Getting rare now but they are faster that a lot more modern hot hatches that have more power.

My money would be on an s13, but you will be lucky to find one that isn't rusty and or abused for that money.

S-body (s14, s13 or even s12)
Mr2 Tubro
Mk3 Supra
Soarer TT (not many out there in budget but there are a few)
Starion

Not much else springs to mind.

Funnily enough I have just been looking at 200s just to see what they're going for now and there is 1 for sale on Pistonheads for less than £5k and only 4 in the whole country on Autotrader, the cheapest is an S14 for £2.6k.

For retro I would definitely go for an S13 if I'm being brutally honest - mainly for the pop-up headlights :)

From a non-biased point of view then the Fiat coupe or MR2 would be my choices.

Fiat Coupe Turbo, im interested for some reason though i seem to have it in my head that they are super unreliable or something? is this true?

They need looking after, if you neglect it then it will bite you in the ass, I had one for 8 years (from new) and never really had any problems.

In the end it did cook itself but that's because I stupidly ignored a water leak so it was entirely my own fault.

They make a great noise and are viciously quick in a straight line :) It's a well worn phrase but these will be a future classic!

To be fair old Saab's are cool - they look so unassuming yet with minimal fettling will rocket away

But yeah, 9-3's are really, truly terrible cars. It's like an exercise in how to make a Vauxhall worse in every department bar interior

I will never look at GM in the same way again. I had a MK3 Astra for my first car. It did its job and was an okay car. This though? It's grey in every sense of the word. Grey paint, grey leather, grey trim/carpets and grey performance. Even if it was bright ******* pink and green, it'd still be (figuratively) the greyest thing on earth.

Still miss my '91 Supra, kept it at the stock 300bhp and it was bulletproof with scary performance :)

Bloke round the corner has one of these and i have quite the lust for it. Didn't realise they had digi-dash either - one million cool points right there even before anything else is taken into account!

Best place to look is driftworks or sxoc. You really don't need to try to sell these cars so very few people will bother spending the £15 on an auto trader advert. One of my good friends drives a great s14 and he regularly gets approached when he's getting out his car by strangers saying that if he ever sells it to give them a call.
