Microsoft will have no choice but to give consumers free Windows upgrades once it launches Windows 10 and kicks off its fast-fast-fast tempo, an analyst asserted.

"If Microsoft wants consumers to update and keep up to date, it really means that Microsoft is going to have to give those consumers those updates for free. There's really no other way to do it," said Michael Silver of Gartner at the research firm's annual technology conference.

"A consumer isn't going to give Microsoft a credit card and say, 'Charge me for a new release whenever one comes out,'" Silver added. "It's very likely that consumer releases will be free."

That will affect Microsoft's bottom line: With Windows 10 expected to be the nameplate for the OS for years longer than the usual three-year cycle between major upgrades -- from Windows 7 to Windows 8, say -- free means that consumers will never again have to pay to upgrade their PC's OS.

Bill Gates also mentioned it recently when he was interviewed regarding the recycling project where they turn human waste into clean drinking water. After trying some and commenting its as tasty as bottled water a reporter then asked if he was going to do the same to Windows Vista to which he replied that unfortunately it was impossible to polish that turd into a decent OS thats why the free update was for Windows 7 and above. ;)

bought a laptop that came with win 8 hated it so much i never upgraded the vista machine
guess i could upgrade the vista system with the win 8 and then to win 10
and see how it works out if i like it i can also upgrade the laptop

just install win8 fresh with that key its simple. if you dont like win8 just use a prog that mimicks win7 many free ones and anything is better than vista. :p
 
I don't get the hate for Windows 8. I find it very snappy and very easy to work with and I am a stalwart for sticking with what I know.
 
Not tried 8 myself, and I have a free cooy of it lying in a drawer. I've heard its better than 7 for gaming. Though the default interface isn't great. But can be tweaked to be much more friendly.

I've had a copy of win 8 sat on the side for months , decided to install it the other week whilst doing a system clear out. Updated to 8.1 and i don't think i could go back to 7 now.
Even quite like metro.
 
I'm dubious. MS say Win10 will be a service and that stinks of subscription to me. Reckon there will be a clause somewhere that invalidates your old licence once you have switched over.
 
Just watched the presentation video, it seems there will be cross platform gaming between win10 and xbox one. Not only that but you can stream and play all your xbox games on any win10 device through xbox live app. Pretty interesting changes.
 
Nice gesture by MS , Guessing it will be a bare bones version and everything extra will have to be purchased via the app store or use 3rd party programs?

W8 I can't fault has never crashed in my 24/7 rig is stable snappy and just works
 
Great news, was expecting/hoping that they would do the £15 upgrade like they did with Win 8 but this is better. :)
