DX12 news-Windows 10 upgrade free for owners of Windows 7 and 8.1

Bill Gates also mentioned it recently when he was interviewed regarding the recycling project where they turn human waste into clean drinking water. After trying some and commenting its as tasty as bottled water a reporter then asked if he was going to do the same to Windows Vista to which he replied that unfortunately it was impossible to polish that turd into a decent OS thats why the free update was for Windows 7 and above. ;)

Guess you didn't install SP2 then... ;)

Can't find info whether there will be multiple versions of 10, Home, Pro etc.

If they are giving it out as a free upgrade, it's either going to be one version of 10, or they are going to give you the version based on you serial.

I'm dubious. MS say Win10 will be a service and that stinks of subscription to me. Reckon there will be a clause somewhere that invalidates your old licence once you have switched over.

Nope, he confirmed after the talk its not subscription. you get your copy and that's it.

Not particularly directed at you but I cant believe after 3 great OS's which have got cheaper and are now free people are still moaning.

i think just 1 version this time around
tho i doubt thats been confirmed anywhere

The free upgrade is only open for a year, after that, no free upgrade.

Sounds like naff wording/needs clarification.

But I think MS need some wins.

They clarified the window of opportunity to redeem the free upgrade from 7/8.1 would be available for only 1 year. After which you must purchase a copy of windows 10 as normal if you don't make use of the free upgrade.

Attaining the free upgrade in that first year will give you a copy of windows permanently. Not subscription based or pay after 1 year.

It is simply that the free upgrade option is only available for 1 year. Which is plenty of time to wait for it to mature if needed too.

I'm a little worried how they said they will support your copy for the "lifetime of the device". Makes it almost sound like an OEM licence which for us lot who change hardware, Could mean it stops working.

Call them up to activate, same as the previous versions. Sure that wont change for Windows 10.

Windows 8 was great once you slapped that 'metro' stuff down.
Pity you had to spend 20 mins making sure you'd never open anything in a crappy 'app' that was much worse than existing 'desktop' programs.
8.1 made that easier & after that it was definitely better than 7.
I actually preferred the start screen to the start menu - but didn't want to ever, ever use a full-screen, no-menus, no-buttons, no-window 'app'.

Bit worried about 10 being free - It certainly wasn't free to develop so that money has to come from somewhere, I fear they're going to try & slip advertising into your start screen, aggressively push the app store in your face etc I'd much rathr pay £50 or so & be left alone for a few years in a professional environment. Maybe my fears are unfounded...

If they do go down that route hopefully its kept to their home/core/whatevertheyarecallingit versions and they leave it out of Professional. It would make sense that enterprise versions would be left alone advertising wise, don't want a distracted workforce, there are enough reasons to avoid working as it is.

I just think they are pulling out all the stops to make sure Win 10 is a success and is adopted by Win 7 users. Everything is being done to make it a success.

They are getting rid of IE with all it's negative baggage and calling it a new name. Making the O.S free for a year. They just want to wash away any old conceptions and start fresh.

That was obvious.
Hololens create a new direction also with NASA with new hardware.
The OS isnt just about interacting with the PC but to hook you up with ladies naked slight drop of sweat running past the breasts, into that navel then down so smooth and shaved down and then the power company decided to cut the power? I foresee a golden age for adults.

Well this is some amazing news for us gamers! Well pleased with the news, i'm going to make the jump when it's released for sure! Also heard there is quite a lot of support for DX12 too so hopefully DX12 will get off to a good start unlike its predecessors which had more of a slow start!

Conspiracy theory...

Nvidia did some sort of deal with M$ to make this a free Windows upgrade, to try and completely kill Mantle (albeit DirectX is not owed by Nvidia, but M$).

If everyone had to pay for Windows 10, relatively few would upgrade quickly, so many would not have DX12...

Mantle would get a better chance to get a foothold and AMD would get a chance to improve their share of the market.
