Cans or Headset

I'm looking to buy myself a new pair of phones but have frankly been overwhelmed by the amount of marketing BS out there.

ATM I use a DGX sound card with Panasonic HTF 600's which as anyone can tell you is an an amazingly good combo for the money, but alas it is mainly for music. The pannies have amazing clarity through all the ranges with frankly outstanding bass. What they don't do so well is aural positioning, which I really want as I game more than listen to music, plus I can still use my pannies for just music listening when I want.

So my main priority is sound positioning for 3D sound in game.
I'm looking to buy another sound card next month an ASUS Xonar Phoebus, so USB is without a doubt out of the question.

My budget is a mere 70 to 100 quids.

I had been ready to submit to the Kingston HyperX Clouds but I've read that their positioning isn't that great and are actually better for music than 3D sound gaming as they are essentially re-branded Takstar Pro 80's.

Any advice as always welcome.

Oh, another thing I've noticed is that Razer phones always seem to carry a premium for a small driver, which kind of stinks of BS.

I use my Sennheiser HD 25-1 II and webcam microphone, no headset will be as good as industry standard monitors.

If you are going for a surround headset get hardware surround not software.

I have read good things about the HyperX Cloud 2s. I would have recommended the Corsair H1500, but that has a USB connector so it's out of the question.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to get the Xonar Phoebus ? I think the headphones should have priority, since those are the ones delivering most of the sound.

The phoebus will be driving the cans so I need a good positional sound card, my dgx is okay but it's tinny at times on simulated 5.1.

I'm not even considering a USB as that suggests it does the job the sound card should be doing, which is, well to be polite, naff!

If you are after positional audio I've heard the Coolermaster 5.1 cans are pretty good.

Personally I wouldn't recommend using studio monitoring cans like the hd25 or dt150's for gaming since the flat bass response and brutally dominant mid-ranges make a fairly harsh listening experience.

For pure stereo headphones for music the Philips Fidelio's are pretty hard to beat at any price point.

Thanks Azer, that's a pretty decent piece of advice.
Positioning in game would be the priority and the CM 5.1's seem to be good value as they also (apparently) don't do too bad a job of music if I want them too, plus the bonus there is that I can by pass the USB sound card and plug the analogue jacks straight into my current sound card.

If I'm having a music sesh I can stick with my Panasonic HTF-600's.

Thanks again, I'll probably go with the CM's.

Actually, just noticed the CM's are end of life, that makes me a bit scared as to how much support they will receive on W10.

going to just bite the bullet and get some Razer tiamat 7.1's, much as I'm kinda of the idea that Razer are full of Bs half the times.

I'll run them in 5.1 off my DGX and then in a month or two I'll treat myself to the Phoebus.
