MacBook 13" - Air or Pro?

Thanks chaps. I still have both but have already decided to go for the Pro due to the better screen, even though I now know I cannot upgrade the memory. It really will just be a machine for Lightroom whilst I'm travelling, and the extra battery on the Air plus the reduced weight isn't enough of a difference.

I think what kept me thinking about it was just the difference in specs between the two machines I ended up with - the Air with the i7 and 8 gb RAM seemed to have the edge, but the screen on the Pro is too good to ignore.

Interesting that I was in the same quandry the week before xmas. I have a 13 " rMBP (Late 2013) 4GB RAM 128GB SSD, and ordered a Macbook Air 11" 8GB RAM 128GB SSD.

I actually preferred the MBA when it came, and it was only the fact that I could get a full refund on the MBA if I sent it back that meant I'm still using the rMBP - sadly I had some last minute money hassles before xmas and couldn't keep both.

Hoping to get another MBA in the next month or so as I really feel I made the wrong decision.

MBP every time. I was going to go for the air but the screen and processor speed of the pro draw me to that instead. All that being said tho, I am still yet to buy it hahaha

The screen on the Air is terrible for the price Apple is charging.

Put it next to something modern and it looks like junk.

Also there is a lottery as to if you get one from the better manufacturer (Samsung I think)

I'm looking at the 13" rmbp with the upgraded ram and 256 memory. This is going to be my first Macbook and I can't wait. If the 256gb of space runs low would I be ok to get a external hdd or a nas?

The display, fair enough, but processor speed? What are you doing with the machine, because if we're talking i7 Air against the rMBP, there is virtually no difference (IIRC the i7 Air is slightly quicker in some cases). Only in terms of graphics is the rMBP noticeably ahead, but not enough so to make or break (and to be honest, the same argument could be made for the i5 Air's CPU performance in comparison). If you want performance, a 15" rMBP is where you want to be.

Of course it would...?

Some airs were shipping with a TN panel iirc. Shameful!

All Airs have TN Panels. Only retina MacBooks are/have been IPS. Even the older High-Res 15'/17" MBP was TN, just a better quality one.

To be fair it's not really Apple's fault, it's market forces coming out of China. I had an interesting discussion with a IBM/Lenovo rep at work a few years ago. Corporates still wanted 4:3 laptops with an option for IPS, however Lenovo couldn't get any supplies of any decent screens. So it was either cheap TN widescreens or charge £200 more a unit and start making their own screens again. Market forces and the race to the bottom on price won that one. The old T43s with Flexview screens were lovely.

I went from a 21.5" iMac to a 13" rMBP.

Battery life is ace... display is great... I intend on keeping this for at least 3 years so upped the ram and the SSD...

I initially had the 128 drive... but iTunes / photo filled that. I attempted to run my iPhoto library off a 64gb micro sd card - but it was far too slow, so swapped it...

I'm extremely impressed.
