Advanced Micro Devices may not have a clear product roadmap for 2015, when it essentially will continue selling current-generation products and will not increase performance of its chips significantly. Nonetheless, the company pins many hopes on its 2016 lineup when it will have a number of new products that are expected to be considerably more competitive compared to those available today or in 2015.

In 2016 AMD plans to introduce two new high-performance general-purpose microprocessor architectures: K12 high-performance ARMv8-A compatible architecture that is expected to significantly strengthen AMD’s positions on the market of ARM servers; Zen high-performance x86 micro-architecture that is projected to return AMD to high-performance desktops and servers. Both micro-architectures are expected to play a tremendously important role in AMD’s future. The company seems to be optimistic about its competitive positions in 2016 and onwards.

I really hope Zen annihilates Haswell-E, forcing Intel to lower their prices and release an 8-core for £300-400, though I have my doubts, hopefully AMD will prove me wrong :)

We can hope AMD pulls a rabbit out the hat. Expecting it would be foolish. I do feel Intel has too much in hand but they could at least force Intel's hand a bit.

Not a chance in hell of that happening, which is unfortunate for us end users. AMD have been slashing their R&D budget year on year for a while now.

Intel have been struggling since Sandy, so, any one who has the money to invest could end up giving them a bloody nose.

However, you need to factor in why people buy AMD. They don't buy them for raw performance they buy them because they're fantastic value for money, so as long as AMD don't change that they won't need to beat Intel.

Rabbit and hare springs to mind.

I would love AMD to come out with another 'K7', I just cannot see it though even if they do match or even surpass Intel I would expect huge heat issues.

Not sure Intel have really been struggling - coasting along providing evolutionary products (rather than revolutionary), whilst continuing to transition to newer production processes largely without problems that others seem to be facing.

I think, Zen will be against LGA1151, not again LGA2011. So solid performance with 8 threads. Its more than clear, they cant hit Intel IPC, but they can by around 80-90% of IPC and AMD have ussually better effectivity in multithread (compare example Phenoms II vs Lynfields 4c/4t).

Samsung just started volume production of 14nm, beating Intel by some months for proper chips with actual utility. Even if you count the awful Core Ms, it's a tie. I think Intel are going to be straight up overtaken on 10nm.

Jim Keller was the architect behind the Athlon 64, which if i recall at the time gave Intel a run for their money. I'm pretty confident he'll be able to produce something that really shows what AMD was and hopefully still is about.

Wouldn't hesitate to give AMD my money, if Zen is similar performance to Skylake. Hell, I'd even consider it it they were within 5%.

I would have said that they more than gave Intel a run for their money. It wasn't until the 'core' micro architecture that Intel retook the lead. AMD being competitive at the top end would be great for everyone so I am really hoping this is on the mark!

AMD Zen will be based on 14nm Summit Ridge Family high performance CPUs for servers and high end comsumers. The CPUs will use new socket FM3 with up to 8 cores and maximum 95W TDP, DDR4 memory and PCI Express 3.0. It will expect to launch in Q3 2016.

http://wccftech.com/amd-zen-feature...-fm3-socket-support-ddr4-memory-compatiblity/

So it will be interesting to how well 14nm Summit Ridge Family will perform against 10nm Cannonlake CPUs for mainstream and 14nm Skylake-E CPUs for high end.

If 14nm Summit Ridge performance is less and use more power than 10nm Cannonlake CPUs then I will get Cannonlake ever if it will have PCI Express 4.0 support.

Q3 - 2016, that is a longs way out yet jeez. Nothing new until then? I guess we could see another Piledriver refresh.. Again.. FX 8380 and FX 8380E :p

At least we should get desktop Broadwell / Broadwell -K / Skylake / Broadwell - E from Intel this year.

I wish people wouldn't use wccftech.

But, if it's true about FM3. Pretty sure I called that they'd merge their platforms :p

I'd be surprised if we're *only* on FM3 though, unless FM2+ is lasting till 2016.

Finally, AMD's first decent looking CPU since the Phenom II series, unless Intel manage to leapfrog them again before 2016 (not impossible given how they have been walking the race for years now) this should re-inject some much needed competition to the CPU market.

Fingers crossed for something competitive to push the market onwards a bit :)

2016 should be about right for replacing my 2500K

I also don't really get why AMD decided to split their platforms by socket. Would be nice to see a merger again.

Skylake is already in development so I doubt plans would change much. We wouldn't see any "reaction" from Intel to an announcement of a new AMD product until after that, let alone any reaction to an actual product. You're right that they've been walking the race for years now.

Not really holding my breath though, especially if they're only going to offer up to 8 cores (which could mean 4 module-type cores).
