I have started this thread in GD because I believe it to be of general concern rather than software related - do please leave it here.

I have just received an email from someone I know reasonably well, allegedly from her but which I suspected was an attempt to obtain my email password. It contained the subject text "Here's your solution" and claims to be a "What'sApp" message.

The associated links included "oanssl.com" and "celi.ittery.com".

When I opened it in a sandbox I was taken to a page that knew my email address and asked me to re-enter my password.

Not a technique I have previously encountered but fairly convincing.

It may be that her email account had been hacked and this email was sent to all of her contacts. Some of them may have a less suspicious nature than I have.

Further investigation suggests that the scam may originate in the Russian Federation (What a surprise ) and that it may also be connected with a site called skitickets.biz.

The most shocking thing to me is people still use yahoo.
Likewise Hotmail and Gmail ;)

Trust no one!

Take your self seriously? :)
Have you heard about the Nigerian Prince who works in banking?
He's told me not to tell anyone else though.
I take it that neither of you know anyone at all who has had their email hacked?

People who get out more than you do and have friends and acquaintances may be aware of some of them succumbing to this rare phenomenon. Perhaps they will warn others who have been or might be suckered ;)

I'm pretty sure everyone on here knows not to click on email content and has informed their family on what to look for. They might even know about not logging on as admin or have tweaked their registry to disable some vectors.

Try telling it to Sony :D

Well I have no friends, nor any acquaintances, so I'm afraid I don't know anyone who has had their email hacked. Were I to put some clothes on and leave the basement that may change.

By 'people that have friends and acquaintances' you mean 'idiots' right?
Some kind-hearted but misguided soul may have tried to reassure you that having no friends or acquaintances was a sign of genius - it isn't, it's a sign of having a personality disorder ;)

I don't need reassurance :D.

Which personality disorder are you referring to? :D

If we have a new thread every time a new generic email scam makes its way round the world, this forum will soon be full to capacity.

There is one overriding rule that will guarantee you never click a dodgy link in an email: Common sense :)
