Oh noes!

Just got this slightly troubling email:

Dear Mr Free Coffee Abuser,

As you may know, offering a complimentary tea or coffee while you are shopping with us is one of the ways we like to say thank you for your custom.

Just in the same way as a friend might offer a hot drink when you visit their home, we think it's what a caring business should do when a loyal customer shops with us.

That’s why we've come up with this short guide to help all our myWaitrose customers make the most of the scheme and to remind you about scanning your myWaitrose card. We hope that through observing this free tea and coffee etiquette, we can continue to offer a complimentary hot drink each time you shop with us.

Free tea and coffee etiquette
1. Become a myWaitrose member and shop with us a little (or a lot)
2. Enjoy a free tea or coffee when you pop in for your groceries
3. Swipe your myWaitrose card at the till

In our Cafés
From 9 February we will be asking myWaitrose members who wish to enjoy their free tea or coffee in one of our Cafés to also purchase a treat - such as a sandwich, cake, biscuit or piece of fruit. This change will enable us to continue to offer our customers the enjoyable service they expect.

Once again, thank you for shopping with us and we look forward to serving you soon.

Yours sincerely,

The myWaitrose team

Does this mean you only get the coffee if you've just swiped the myWaitrosecard at the till having purchased some shopping, before claiming the coffee?

Or is it that you can swipe it at any till whether or not you've just bought shopping, meaning that from the 9th of Feb loads of café grockles will come and add to the queues at the customer service coffee machines, because they can get a free coffee without having to buy something first?

Is this the beginning of the end for free coffee at Waitrose?

Is this the beginning of the end?

I usually ask the person on the till to put a coffee through when i check out and then grab one from the machine on the way out. The hours that I go to the store the cafe is shut already.

Also got that email earlier today :(

Bit annoyed there's so few things you can buy to get the free coffee. Wish they made it something more like spend £20 in a week, get free coffees the following week.

The "till" process isn't very clear to be honest. The "cafe" bit... It isn't the end of the World if you have to buy an apple or a banana to get a free tea/coffee.

Excellent development, it's bad enough when you go to Waitrose that at times you have to contend with poor people who have presumably lost their way while trying to get to Lidl but 'value-seekers' can be just as frustrating with their irritating habits of 'price-checking' or 'couponing'.

u wot m8?

It reads as though the card swipe is mandatory (shopping habits, gotta catch em all!) as is the purchase of something cafe related. So free, I guess, but only when you buy a banana or something else you didn't want and wouldn't have purchased unprompted.

I get what you mean but actually I'm more fed up of people thinking they are of higher importance tutting at me because I'm also shopping. The free tea or coffee and newspaper after X amount is best thing ever though

Got the email and to be honest, it's a good thing. Waitrose free coffee was great when it first launched, two years ago I think.
But then the floodgates opened to the masses and the plebs invaded :(.

Oh noes all those people having to make it round the store shopping without ("free") coffee - how will they cope ?

Got it last night and happy that the reward for "actually" doing some shopping is a coffee and not for those who are just using the card for a drink.

Not sure what has changed?

It's always been a case of BUY your shopping and get a free coffee, rather than go in and pick one up on your way to work.

Aren't they just reiterating what you agreed to in the first place?
