Apple posts the biggest quarterly profit in history

Why does Apple get 99% of the flack? It's Foxconn that's mostly responsible.

Because they employ Foxconn and know what goes on so does that mean they are OK with it? As long as they make billions in profit I expect they couldn't give a toss.

My wife is a professor of business ethics and it is exactly this kind of supply chain issues that she focuses on. I can tell you that Apple is one of the worst offenders in the tech industry although there are plenty similarly as bad. Others do far better.

Out of interest, who does it better in the electronics field?

Foxconn are responsible for their work environment and staff. Apple have asked for their business to build their products, it's up to Foxconn to take care of their end and make sure it happens. IMO it's not down to Apple, it's up to the supplier.

Foxconn are huge and make shed loads of profit too, why can't they take a drop in their margins and improve the welfare of their employees. Also, who's to say it wouldn't happen with another company Foxconn worked with.

At the end of the day Apple are a business, they will go where's cheap and reliable. Just like 99% of companies out there, including the one i work with now. We have suppliers in eastern Europe and China that get paid **** all. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

But if they knowingly use a company that has bad practices it should reflect on them. An ethical company would look at reducing their massive profit and use a better supplier.

And we all buy cheap clothes/shoes made by poor people in horrendous conditions in places like Bangladesh. That's just the way of the world.

Exactly. Amazing how people get their backs up when it's Apple. Your comfortable western lifestyle is built on the blood, sweat and tears of those less fortunate than you. I don't give a ****. And I won't be made to feel bad for being born into a privileged position either by a bunch of hippies that pick and choose what social justice campaign they intend to wave the flag of simply because they don't like that particular company for whatever inane reason. EVERY company is ****ing someone so we can all buy **** we don't need.

HP for example have a very active CSR department that has pushed changes in worker conditions.
Microsoft, Google, Intel and Sony are all pretty good.

Some of the issues surrounding Apple is that since they make such large orders they have a larger ability to negotiate down production costs. The Chinese manufacturers are thus more willing to accept lower profits but have to pass on these reduced production costs to their worker by reducing salaries or increasing working hours, reducing worker conditions.

In the last eyar or so Apply have started making changes but they are way behind other big names in IT.

No, it is up to Apple to find a supplier that has good worker conditions. A company is not absolved of responsibility because they outsource production. Apple is responsible for their entire supply chain.

Ethical companies do indeed look down their supply chain. Apple don't.

Apple is no different to any other company that out sources to Foxconn which includes all these companies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn#Major_customers Apple simply make the headlines because they make the most profit. You think conditions are better for those working on the Microsoft production line compared to the Apple line? Or the Nokia line to the HP line? They're all working 12 hour shifts and being woefully underpaid for it.

Why should you single out Apple, apart from it makes the most money out of it, loads of companies are at it!

HEADRAT

Because Apple aren't the underdogs anymore so they get the flack. Used to be Microsoft but the positions have swapped.

Still amuses me they and their products generate so much ire. Just use what you like. Fanboys are annoying. Blind haters are annoying.

Maybe they consider lowering the price of their phones now?

Hah. No.

Average price of the iPhone has gone up with the release of the iPhone 6 range.

You are mistaken in thinking that all Foxconn workers are under the same conditions.

That is a specific allegation that can affect different companies, that doesn't dismiss what i have said at all.

If you think conditions are better on any other production line simply because of who the contract is for you're as deluded as any Apple fanboy. Foxconn ***** on all it's workers regardless of who the production line or facility is contracted to. This has been covered by the media in the last several years multiple times. It is not a problem unique to Apple. It is not a case of Apple being a worse offender than anyone else. It's simply a case of Foxconn doing it because they can and the fact Chinese labourers still queue up round the block outside their factories and they can replace as many people as they want. It's the industrial revolution for the 21st century.

And nothing is going to change because 1st world companies say so. Because we as a society are not willing to actually pay more to increase Chinese and poor European workers wages. We also fundamentally don't care because if we did, we wouldn't be buying our computers, laptops, digital cameras, mobile phones and every other electronic gadgets we have to make our lives more comfortable from more than just Apple who are complacent in those workers conditions. We'd be making a stand against it with our wallets. And then there's the workers themselves and the state of the country they live in. Things didn't change in Britain until unionisation and it's not going to change in China too and good luck not having your union march violently oppressed by the Chinese government for encouraging dissent and being a threat to the security of the nation.

It was the nature of it. As if my writing to my MP will have any effect on changing laws?

So you accept that Governments are looking to change the laws to stop Apple and other companies offshoring their profits in tax havens?

I thought you said you'd already written to your MP:

I've complained to my MP for all the use it does.

So unless you like writing futile letters you must think it has some impact?

Imagine if the iPhone were made in the UK, it would cost like double at least

Every factory worker in the far east is paid peanuts, it's how come we have such amazing tech at low prices
