A Budget Gaming Build AMD/Intel

For a single 1080 why bother with anything other than a 270X or 750ti?

With these 450w to 550w would be fine.

You could hesitate to add an SSD initially, but a 120gb or 240gb would do for the OS drive and not cost too much. It makes it all a lot more snappy. Do you have an OS?

This might sound like a stupid question, but if I were to buy the motherboard this week and wait until the end of February to buy the CPU, what are the chances the i5 4690K will be in stock or still be in production? This has happened to me before when I built a laptop with a retailer. I opted for the GTX 860m and when I'd saved the cash to buy the laptop, they were no longer doing it with an 860m because Nvidia had just released the new 900m line. That took the price up a fair bit which stopped me being able to afford it. I don't want to buy the motherboard and in a month or two, Intel stop supporting the socket etc lol :D

The reason I ask this is because I've been hearing something about Intel Broadwell.

The i5 4690K was only released in June last year. You won't have any problems getting one at the end of Feb.

Broadwell is also compatible with Z97 boards. They are due out sometime this year (Maybe 1st half 2015)

SuperFlower PSU's are new to me. Are they any good? I always thought, Antec, Cooler Master and Corsair were the only way to go in regards to a PSU?

Because on a lot of games with high settings they will struggle.

For a budget gaming build as the title suggests it was only a consideration for the OP.

Not actually aware of any game those cards cannot play, nor aware of anyone who expects to run the latest eye popping titles at ultra high settings with a GPU under £200 within a budget gaming rig.

Most seem to think the 750 ti, 270X, 285 as the cards to look at under £200, with the better value being the lower cost models in budget gaming rigs, even Custom PC and PC Format show such GPU's as the choice for 1080p and budget rigs.

A lot of people have told me to go for the i5-4690K and I understand that it's a better CPU, but I used to own an i5-4670K based system and I never once used it's overclocking features. If I paid £200 for the i5-4690K it would simply be a waste of money and I don't think I'd want to overclock it because I'd be too worried about destroying it. With the AMD Athlon X4 860K Black Edition, I can learn to OC without the fear of destroying the CPU because it's a lot cheaper to replace. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think warranty covers OC damage? I'd still have my old i5-4670K based system if it wasn't for personnel problems which came up at that time which forced me to have to sell my rig.

Is that a good budget build or should I change it a little? I already have some HDD's and sometime in the near future, I'll buy an SSD for it and maybe an AIO water cooler for the CPU. I'd like to get the Fractal Design Define R5 for this build. However, it's a little expensive so I might need to look around for a different case. I do like the sleek minimalistic look of Fractal cases.

You are paying over the odds on the PSU.

£90 on the motherboard is a lot, many A88 £50'ish ones will overclock just fine too.

Bgrade GTX760 for the same price as that 750ti - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BG-372-MS

Bgrade GTX750 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BG-424-MS

A good sleak case thats like a R5 is the Antec P100.

Or fort a cheap CPU that you can overclock and not cry too much if you kill it due to the cheap cost then the Pentium K fits that bill,

The PSU is what worries me. If I OC will it have enough power for the CPU/Motherboard and does the motherboard support the TDP of the CPU if I overclock it? I've been told to "watch out" for this. lol

The PSU does have the power to run that setup and overclock.

The boards support the CPU.

I have overclocked many Kaveri APUs in the Sniper for instance, the Athlon is based on the same architecture.

Remember to add the cooler to those specs.

What operating system do you intend to use? Do you need an optical drive?

The NZXT 340 is a very tempting case, even I keep looking at it, quite simply elegant in it's simplicity if it fulfills your needs, I have an old ATX system I want to rehouse, and am torn between the R5 and 340.

Another group of cases similar to the R5.

I intend to use Windows 7 and Windows 10 when it is released. That's only if it is any good. If it is anything like Windows 8, I'll be sticking with Windows 7.
