Hi all..

so....I'm looking at buying a 980 at the moment, and have my eye on this KFA2 for £400 + delivery at the moment.

I plan on using it on my oculus rift however, currently suffering with a gtx570 which just isnt able to cope with proper games just the rift demos. For the rift I have read that on using the 1080p display, detail improves significantly when using DSR.

Now due to the current 970 3.5gb issue, and 980s not being much more, I'm wondering if I should wait for the 980ti or other 8gb models, as when pumping extra through using DSR that the 8gb would be extremely beneficial.

However....there is the obvious cost to consider.....if it was going to be say £800 for example then it would be impossible to justify....but if not much more of a premium then perhaps could be worthwhile

i cant give you any idea on price but the kfa2 is a cracking card i have 6th spot in single gpu scoreboard on heaven4 and would highly recommend , its a great clocker

Surely will be an 8gb 980ti tho. I'm still leaning towards Nvidia...mainly because there appears to be more talk between them and Oculus ( a big thing for me) plus had too many issues with amd drivers in the past

Wish I'd held off on buying my DK2 til things were more certain but temptation got better of me :)

Why surely an 8GB 980ti? That card doesn't even exist outside of rumours.
The chance of 8GB 980s are rare, and i probably wouldn't bank of them coming anytime soon (if ever)

well ok I can't be sure.....but through natural progression from both sides of the gfx cards camps, ram + other features will likely be on the up.....whatever the next card gen may be called

i agree tboy, id be surprised if there isnt something coming from nvidia with more memory, 4gb isnt enough in some titles, not like nvidia to miss a opportunity to release something expensive :)

Gibbo said no 8GB 980s or 970s Nvidia flatly refuse.........but they might change their mind or go for 6GB instead

I understand the 980 is a great card and I'm not sure what resolution you're using but if the op wants to use DSR on 1080p I would presume it could struggle in some recent and probably future games.

We are already seeing silly vram usage on 1080p as it is in quite a few games the past year.

If the Ti version of GM200 follows suit of the Kepler 780Ti it should have no reason to have the Titan premium pricetag of £800+. I would guess it'll be around £500-£650 like the 780Ti was at.

The question is can you really wait for NVIDIA to potentially cash cow the Titan brand like they did with Kepler before they release a Ti version? (Titan released Feb 2013 > 780Ti released Nov 2013) The 780 equivalent might make more sense as that was released in May 2013.

I know I'm rambling on but the funny thing is even Gibbo has said he's told NVIDIA over and over to release 8GB 980s as they would sell like no ones business. But they say they will not release any 8GB 980s. NVIDIA do not like to sell a future proof card at a reasonable price ;)

I think NVIDIA are playing the long game again and I would not be surprised if we see 8GB 980s after they have made a mint out of GM200.

So basically I have been really unhelpful because although DSR is a great feature it could become unfavourable with 4GB Vram on some games. There is no current card from NVIDIA that I feel is "future proof" if there is such a thing using high resolutions apart from SLI Titans or similar. Otherwise you could get a 290X 8GB but they make little sense unless you buy at least two of them and they are called Hawaii for a reason ;)

Surely will be an 8gb 980ti tho.

If I could take a guess 6GB because its NVIDIA :p

well I guess, that even if DSR is optimal for rift usage, that texture detail doesnt need to be as maxed out as wouldnt be noticable....so could be turned down whilst still getting benefit of the DSR. At least, I think.....with a comparatively decent price point of 400.....and IF they do release VR sli, and it proves to be efficient instead of the usual buggy mess, can opt to go down that route, for what may be say 350 or so at the time of release

I personally think the only thing that will give you 980 speeds with more than 4 gigs is the next Titan. If you dont want to pay for that(i know i wouldnt) you either wait for the next lineup from nvidia or go AMD.. or just settle with 4 gigs.

Nvidia has no incentive anymore to release double amount of memory model for mainstream cards anymore, because they want to push more people into buying the ridiculously priced Titans...

Whether it will be a 980 or not nvidia have no choice but to bring out 6/8gb cards with their next refresh/iteration. Its already been proven that some games today (i.e BF4) at 4k max detail are using over 3.5gb of VRAM (proven in the 970 vram problem). With 4k becoming more mainstream and games improving all the time on the graphics front Nvidia need to push the boat or risk falling back down stream.

I will buy the new titan next month since I'm left no option

You have plenty of options.. You choose not to.. You can wait for the AMD 300 series.. you can get the 8gig r9 models... or you can as you said yourself buy the next titan.. See.. plenty of options.

I want 6/8GB maxwell that will run 1440p minimum 60fps for the next two years. And I don't really want to wait 3 or 4 months for top AMDs to come out which will almost certainly run hotter, louder and less efficiently.

Within those parametres I don't have much choice :p
