Camping enquipment

Thank you for all the suggestions.

Bit bermused why a question surrounding UV protection is a contentious question, but hey ho.

I've settled on a Vango Kenetic V 500 Airbeam and groundsheet for £505. Over budget, but it's a freind has the same Vango Airbeam affair but bigger and swears by it.

I went into GoOutdoors yesterday and measured up the space of a Vango Icarus 600 Airbeam and it will pretty much half fill the boot.

However weight wise with the total weight the roofbars can hold for a pano roof is 50kg. The combined weight of the tent, box is c.10kg shy of the may weight. This then leaves the boot free for the rest of the stuff.

The Civic has a collapsable boot that does provide extra room.

If it's hot enough to worry about uv protection in the tent you won't be in it.

Sweaty tent roasting by 6am when you've had a skinfull, kids moaning, wife moaning, air bed 1/2 deflated, busting for a pee and the poo contractions have started and there's a 10 minute wait for another sweaty hot box of a toilet that's feels like a coffin. You get up nearly pulling a muscle realising you've not got up off a floor since you were 7. Stub your foot on a tent peg and look around for a brew which us a mission in itself Especially made nice in a plastic mug.

Ahhh I love camping and even though I'm in Cornwall its something I'm going to start again this summer ,maybe the wild free variety but there is a £5 quid a night place I keep seeing that I might try.
I like to keep it simple ,ie 15 /20 min set up ,but this year a little pup tent will do
Last year before I came down here and had a seasonal pitch in St Agnes I noticed a lot of clueless glampers ,one family used to hang their wetsuits above the chemical toilet emptying hole

lol if you have ZERO caamping stuff, then camping holiday is NOT for you. its surprisingly very stressful holiday

you'll probably end up paying more on camping than 2 weeks all inclusive in Majorca

Hire an estate car for the week/end.

I've got an airbeam (Velocity 300) - great tents :-)

Dont forget if car roof can only take 50kg, the bars will weigh 5kg and the box will weigh 15-20kg can only carry 25kg of luggage even if bars are rated to 50kg its what the roof can handle that's important.

Airbeds? Chairs? Tables? Camping's changed a lot since I was a kid... :(

It's when they start talking about carpets it really gets surreal.

By that point I've decided I'll stay in a B&B...

If you can't fit all your equipment on your back then It's not proper camping.:p

This thread makes me really want to try camping but I really dislike the thought of getting raped in the middle of the night because I'm sleeping unsecured :D

Hahaha this is one hilarious comment, that does pretty much sum up camping!!

Haven't been camping in a few years, but certainly does bring back the memories.

This thread fills me with despair.

Last time I camped I took my hammock, a sleeping bag and a tarp with some para cord. Oh and a flint and steel plus food.

You forgot about the unsociable pillock who thinks its ok to sing at 2am in the morning with his special brew. I stick to camping with the Scout these days

Kids love camping.

I'm not disputing that they do. But for someone who has no equipment, a relatively small car and obvious lack of camping experience there are better options. Especially when trying to do it with two young kids!

It also wasn't solely directed at the op. It was directed at people taking mattresses, sheets, duvets and a whole host of other things that really aren't needed. things that defeat many of the objectives of a simple back to nature experience which is what camping is meant to be about for most people that do it.

Most people do it because it's cheaper (or at least that's why my parents used to take us). With the advent of such cheap foreign travel it can be really hard to justify the budget any more if you have to buy the kit at least. Some campsites are horrendously expensive now anyway, you could easily be paying £60+ a night...

I've carried 40 x 4.7m planks of wood on mine, they must have weighed nearly 300kg? They bent the roof rack bars anyway :o

Not saying it was the safest load or that a copper wouldn't have pulled me over, but physically roof racks can bear a lot of weight.

I'd get a braked trailer tent if you have that kind of budget, it doesn't load the car up so much so it is safer if you have to brake, and you'd have the freedom to take what you liked with you. Some trailers store the cooking gear too.

Update, quite impressed how much I've been able to fit in the boot!
