970 to 980 ?

Yeah, I agree with the guys above. You are better off going for a 290X 8GB, because the vram will no longer be a factor in being future proof. If you're wanting performance to match your SLI setup, then crossfire 290X's is probably the best solution, or even a 295X2 (which is what I intend to get)

I can see the point about the 8GB, and maybe I could buy into better if it was with a 980GTX, but it gives me the impression the GPU used etc will run out of power before it will run out of memory...?

I can see the longevity of the GTX 970 and 980 (especially) being compromised due its 4GB but not its architecture, if that makes sense.....?

Hangs head is shame after what I just bought - caved in.

980 is current single GPU king, a fair bit faster than the 970/290s and much more power efficient. And of course it has the full 4GB of Vram it can utilize all at once unlike the 970, making the 980 slightly more future proof with games demanding more memory.

For £100 I would say do it.

Personally I would go for the cheaper and higher clocked KFA2.

I have replaced my 970 with this very Card, it should be here tomorrow:).

It will, which is why it only makes sense in X-Fire. Going from a single 970 to a single 8GB 290X is mostly pointless.

Gotcha :)

Then you have the added consideration of ensuring your PSU is up to it, heat, noise and X-Fire support etc. Cost also is a consideration.

Still if I, he who has been on the fence all weekend, can just buy a KAF2 980GTX and make that work then each to their own :)

I was looking at this one myself. I have the 970 reference, so if I returned that it would be an extra £80 to get the SOC 980, which is 25% price difference, and I wouldn't get much less than that in performance bump. Decisions, decisions!

So i part read the mega thrad about the 970 issues and I bought mine from OcUK right at the end of December last year, and I think the TL:DR i got was, OcUK will refund me if i send it back ?

I play at 1440p so I think I'm more likely to suffer from problems later down the line ?

My question is, is it worth paying the extra money to get a 980 ? I can afford it, and I'm not sure I want a really hot 290. Not sure if it matters but I'm using an Ivybridge i7 @ 3.5GHz.

So if a 980 for about ~£100 more is sensible, then which one ? there's so many :E

something like this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-042-IN&tool=3 ?

Ive got 2 of these coming tomorrow. for my 2 g1's

Think I'm going for the KFA2! As others have said its a bargain at £399, think I will order tonight so it arrives in time for hardline beta on Tuesday! Will replace my 970 G1 which is going back next week.

What length is that card? Looks long with the 3 fans and the Gigabyte G1 only just fit in my case.

I'm not sure, I had better check now you've said that! Although I do have some space left with my G1 in there..

Anyone who gets a KFA2 tomorrow post on here and lets see how you get on, would you please. Very curious as how they compare noise wise with the G1's in the real world

970 is still a decent card. I wish I'd gone 970 SLI instead of 980 SLI tbh.

Hell, if anyone has two reference 970s and £300, I'll swap them for my reference 980s.

Figure I should put my cards where my mouth is :P
