970 or 290X ? Replacing a 6950.

I would hate to put a 290 in a shuttle/HTPC. I can see that getting hot in there very quick. The 970 is a very cool card and the reference blower is great for exhausting heat out the back and I don't even think the ref 290/X does that properly and still exhausts heat into the case.

Ohhh and above all else, you mention he is like me and a huge fan of Batman, so don't make him miss out on effects, go nVidia :)

Batman Arkham Knight isn't that far away now either :D

So I'm replacing my brothers old 6950 for his birthday while he's out working so he'll get a nice surprise when he fires up his games :p

I'm looking at either the 970 or the 290X seeing as they are roughly the same price.

I'm leaning more towards the 970 seeing as it runs slightly cooler and uses less power not forgetting to mention he's a HUGE fan of the Arkham series and the Nvidia effects look the shiznitz but I need the communities help on this one :)

290X

I just got him Origin to tide him over when he gets the 970 in 2 weeks, Should be a nice surprise when he gets home from work to find "Why are my games maxed out running smooth ? HOLY AMAZEBALLZ ?!?!?" :D

Haha, yer and make sure you stick PhysX on to max. That is very decent of you as well to look after your brother like that. Mine sends me a card made of paper and that's it (mind you, more than I send him) :D

After what Nvidia recently pulled, can't believe people still recommending them. They lied to us folks! Come on...

My vote goes on get 290X. If you ever go a higher resolution monitor, it will be better having that anyway.

So miss out on decent things because there is only 48 ROPS and not 54. Yer, sounds like a plan.

If that is the only problem your perceive in this whole debacle then sure go ahead. Get a 970. My opinion stands, Nvidia should not be rewarded for lying to it's customers. At least not an the very same card it lied with...

The way you make it sound like Greg is as if there is a huge price or performance difference between 290X and 970. If there a big difference I could understand one's difficulty, but that is not the case here.

Not sure what AMD did you to fall in love blindly with Nvidia so much. Even worse I wonder what it would take for Nvidia to do to make you fall out of love with them... lol :p;)

I have had cards from both companies multiple times, just don't get why one would be loyal to one or the other.

I respect your opinion and if that is how you want to do it, spot on, however, I took into account that the OP's brother is a big fan of the Batman games, which GameWorks apparently cripples performance on AMD cards and nVidia also has the benefit of added effects that really bring the games to life and it looks proper bland with no PhysX on. Plus I read the thread and the OP's brother has a micro ATX board/case and a 290X is gonna get very very hot in there and noisy.

Soooo, that is why I recommend nVidia's 970 over the 290X. I don't cut off my nose to spite my face :D

Haha :D Fair enough about the batman games. I can't comment about the huge difference as I never played them with physx.

To be fair after reading more posts I can see why you would say 970. I guess the recent revelation of what Nvidia did disappointed/upset me more than most here, enough to not want to reward them with business for a while at least. Though I can't say I would never buy Nvidia ever again, they have lost a lot of respect from me.

Come on, at the same price I'd take the 970 every time but performance isn't at all "crippled" in Batman games on AMD - I've completed all three on AMD hardware with no problems at all!

I agree about Batman Origins but we had thread after thread of which I defended GameWorks and even showed results of AMD beating nVidia but I was told repeatedly that I was wrong and GameWorks usurps AMD users.

Can't win :D

Kudos to reasoning

Well I'm sorry but I won't be agreeing with whoever said that in the thread. Batman might well perform better on NVidia hardware (although I've not tried it personally) but it's far from crippled on AMD. :)

That is one of the many and even the bench thread I run for Batman Arkham Origins clearly shows that AMD have fantastic optimisations in that game but even now, certain people still insist that there is a conspiracy with B:AO and AMD getting ******

The only difference Nvidia hardware has to AMD hardware in the Batman games is the Physx effects, You can select up to normal Physx effects but it has an impact on frames whereas on Nvidia you can select high Physx and the impact isn't anywhere as bad.

Performance wise minus Physx, Both camps seem to perform brilliantly across the board in the Arkham games :)

Pretty much how I see it. I didn't know you could use PhysX in Origins in truth and sweet if you can.

Yep, Some of the effects are gorgeous :)
