Bounties of course help but I found playing pvp would level my character quickly. One other thing you could try is getting a higher level friend to help you so you can raise the difficulty when doing the story and get a greater xp bonus.

I've been PVPing from lv8 -> 14, after a few matches I've started to get used to how things work and getting in a good amount of kills. Still need to learn all the skills the different classes have. Fav gun so far is the scout rifle, its really solid if you can get in those head shots.

get a friend to run you through the story missions on hard.
Amazing how quick you can do them when you have a level 31 / 32 with an exotic smashing everything in sight. Let them create an alt and return the favour. You can get to level 14 in about a day's hard playing.
Using this power levelling you'll probably unlock mars before you are the right rank. Do all the bounties you can find to bump you up then finish the story.
Its amazing how much you can level up doing every available eris bounty and PVE bounty per day for a few days.
My cousin insists the game is carp because he completed story mode by level 10... I was doubting him but he did describe the final Black Garden boss fight in great detail. Made me feel inqdequate because I struggled on that level back when I was level 18...

The black garden isn't available until you reach level 15. The easiest difficulty on it is 18, and you can't enter an activity if it's 4 or more levels higher than you are.
It might be possible if he joined a fireteam of mates but solo I don't think you can do it against enemies 8-10 levels higher than you. I'm not sure its even possible to just do the core missions and remain a level 10 by the end. You tend to level up so you're usually there or abouts at the missions level which is 18 for the Black gate I think.
In summary dont feel inadequate.. he probably didnt play the whole thing plus the real

Its the best I've found for wave after wave of enemies for levelling up guns, xp, engrams, relic iron and has 2 loot chest spots.

Did this, some bounties and some pvp. Got from level 2 to 14 in about 6 hours
, way too much xbox for one sitting! Lol.

It's better if you do earth, moon and venus on your own (perfectly doable) as you'll get a lot more experience than having a higher level do all the work. Then pull a friend in for help on the mars ones.
Take frequent trips to the tower and pick up bounties for each planet and patrol missions etc, easily get to level 20 in a day or so.
If you have the dark below you can also do the Eris bounties right away, they give high experience amounts. Makes getting level 20 easy!

Quick word of warning on this;
If you are doing the "Kill blades of Crota on Earth or the moon" be careful when attacking them at a relatively low level. Occasionally the blade will be accompanied by level 22 Acolytes despite only being level 3-6 itself. I have seen this both in the Steppes and Mothyards.
You can still kill the blade if you're careful but the Acolytes will basically one shot anything < level 6 and are immune until you hit level 18...

On a side note it was a reasonable weekend playing a bit of Destiny.
Got my hunter up to level 32 and also picked up the CE raid helmet (full CE raid gear for my hunter now) which, once upgraded, will allow her to be 32 across multiple armour sets.
Ran a few RoC's and finally worked out how to get into the "safe spot" on the Nexus strike. Pretty naff spot for NF's though. The splash damage was horrendous (didn't help that the boss had its attention 100% on me...). Carried a level 24 running an un-upgraded Stranger rifle and green sniper through the strike. He died a few times but picked up a new armour piece and 272/294 attack fusion rifle.
"Kit" the Titan is nearly level 29 now which is nice. Feels odd to run as her though as she is limited to my wife'w weapon loadout. Badger feels so damn cumbersome compared to VoC / Fang / Rapier. Hits like a truck though which makes up for it somewhat.

Not a bad week for me, although armour has stopped dropping for my hunter. I did get the raid gloves and boot levelled up, and don't touch me. Did one nightfall, but Omnigul with arc burn is just horrible, got booted back to orbit at the end once...didn't help some that some LFG knob was afk half the time.....got another Hard Light, sharded.
Really want helmet and chest for hunter so I can switch about different setups. I have 3 exotic helms, don't touch me, and radiant dance machines, so it would be nice to be able to switch them out.

To be honest heroic exclusion zone still looks to be better for xp/glimmer farming. Its true it doesn't have chests or relic iron but like most people I no longer concern myself with farming for resources when I can just buy them with vanguard marks or do the daily. Even the weekly is decent for loot/xp/glimmer as it has solar burn and the onmigul strike is packed full of enemies.
Came across this comment from DeeJ on the Bungie forums and so thought I'd share it here (seeing as his replies are like unicorn poop!). It's in reply to a thread "proving" that what Xur sells is not random. This is from earlier today.

Xur is randomized. There are times when we can pull off miracles like making him stay in the Tower longer when Christmas is cancelled, but his inventory is governed by the same chaos that influences all the loot drops.
Comments in that video about "the plan" were more about the fact that we know what he's selling before he appears, even if we can't reach out and stock his shelves ourselves. We set him in motion, and his will is not his own.
Also in that video, you can hear me confessing that I'm not always in the loop when it comes to these things, so you should take pre-game lobby comments among friends with a grain of salt. That video was from months ago, and I was still learning the intricacies of all the new systems that we launched with the game.
These conspiracy theories are symptoms of a burning desire. Gjallarhorn is the most popular ask that comes my way. I know you want it, even more than the collective requests for more vault space. As you can see, these are things that are beyond my control. I don't have one either.
I'll do my best to talk to the people who create the code that drives Xur, and see if we can make him more valuable to you in the future.

Got too Lv20 last night, and got my first peice of light gear, nothing special yet only gives 5 light haha. Quick question, is it silly to spilt time between PVE/PVP instead of just focusing on 1. I personally want to keep a good mix so I don't get too bored.
