I had a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo 600 PC since 2002 or something. The specs were 256mb RAM, 1.6GHz Pentium 4, 64GB IDE HDD and a Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 64mb card.

Windows XP got extremely slow and laggy, almost unusuable! So I went to Windows 2000 in April 2011 and really loved it since it was really fast for my use!

Back in June 2012 it had stopped working, it was giving continuous long beeps whenever I would boot it up. So I had been trying to get it to work until late December which is where I unscrewed the motherboard from the case (it was upright when I did it, and part of it was touching the case which is what I forgot all about so I tried booting it up and instead of giving beeps, smoke came from it so I quickly shut it off. I examined the motherboard and saw no signs of burn marks. I also noticed that I hadn't seated the graphics card properly at that time of testing. I haven't given any power to it since that incident up until now. I have had many dreams of it working again. I really miss using that computer, especially the times of using Windows 2000. I have now built my own PC but I find it really hard to get over the loss of the old computer. I also have data on it.

I have assembled it together with all the components in the appropriate places. So would it be safe to power it on to see if it works again, keeping in mind it had given off smoke and but left no burnmarks? The smoke smelt of electrical components, like when you get a new motherboard you have that distinctive electrical smell. I would really like to get that computer up and running. I have been planning in the summer to place that computer outside in my garden and attempt to power it on and see if it still gives off smoke. Would that be safe at all?

What are your takes/suggestions on this?

No I said I have built one which has i5 3470K 3.2GHz quad core, 8GB RAM, ASUS Nvidia GeForce GT610 2GB, 128GB SSD, 1TB HDD etc. I am very happy with the build that I created 2 years ago. But I can't plug in the drive since the new PC's use SATA and don't use IDE anymore. And I really wish I could use it again, for all time sake.

UPDATE: I've got a ASUS Nvidia GeForce GTX750Ti OC Edition 2GB GDDR5 and a 1TB SSHD to accompany my 1TB HDD.

You can buy IDE to SATA adaptors or get an IDE drive dock, then you could clone the drive or just transfer the data to your new pc.

Yeah, is there IDE to USB?

But the best thing would be having the actual experience of using that PC again. Would it be a good idea to plug it in and start it up? Or is it too dangerous?

Look for a USB hard drive dock with IDE on it. Have one at work.

At most I would just make the hard drive into a VHD make a VM out of it.

That's not actually a bad idea, cheers, I already have a Windows 2000 VM so I can just replace the VHD of Windows 2000 with the physical IDE if I ever get a USB to IDE converter :D

UPDATE: Okay I've tested it outside 2 days ago and it's back to the continuous beeps like it was before, so now there isn't any smoke like there was before around 2 years ago. But I can't even figure out what's wrong with it because whatever I try to do (RAM reseat, getting rid of other cards etc) it still has the same problem. It has a Phoenix D686 BIOS, I've looked up for the beep codes but I can't match it with mine. The pattern is *long beep*, *pause*, *long beep*, *pause* and it goes on endlessly like this. What could the problem possibly be??
