Where do you go for your chicken wings?

So, this is a slightly different thread to the fried chicken one.

This is all about the high streets best snack. The chicken wing. Cheap, tasty (probably not great for you) and readily available both in small portions or as much as you can handle. Always best when cooked fresh of course.

But there is a great amount of variation you get from shop to shop. Fried chicken shops all do them different, so I like to at least try out a bunch of different places when I'm in an area.

With that in mind, my recommendation for Tooting, South london, is Chick n Ribs near the overground station. The meat is juicy, the batter isn't too thick and is well spiced without just tasting like salt or spice. Plus there is actually some meat on the wings. Best wings in tooting, 8 for £2.30 if I remember right.

So where do you go for your favourite wings?

P.S. KFC hot wings are garbage. Why the hell is the batter so airy?

Wings are my favourite part of chicken with all that lovely crunchy crispy skin :), but to be honest I never buy them from cheap high street takeaways for fear of them being cooked ages ago and just left in the warmer, and also for having no meat on them. I live down the road from Tooting, so I may have to try Chick n Ribs. Chicken Shop between Tooting Broadway and Colliers Wood does lovely chicken, and that includes the wings.

Home, that is what happens when you don't live in London. Although we do get stuff a few years behind, Easy to get great BBQ and burgers now. So maybe in a few years.

This is pretty much what I was about to say :p

Though if I'm wrong and there's somewhere awesome in Manchester I'd love to hear about it.

I wish the UK would embrace the wing like the states. I gorge myself at "Wings Stop" and "Wings Basket" when visiting the in-laws in New Mexico. Nothing like their Lemon Pepper, Dynamite XXX and Louisiana rub mix. I've yet to come across anything, anywhere else in the world like the american wing! This includes that pale imitation served at the Red Dog Saloon in Hoxton Square

There seems to be a lot of love for wings in Asian cuisine. From what I've read lately that might actually gain traction over here sooner than the American style wings...though there isn't that much difference in them tbh - just the spices/sauces used.

Easy to get wings being in the States, though having done some oven-fried wings on Sunday I'm a convert!

Easy to do once you get the hang of separating the wings out and cheap as chips also - 4lbs of wings (once tips were discarded) which made 48 wings was around $12, add a couple bucks for the hot sauce and stick of butter and it's a great value option for entertaining :D

Don't discard the tips - save for making stock :)

Wings aren't quite so cheap here but they're still damn cheap if you pick up a box of them. Possibly questionable ethics in terms of the raising of the chickens though sadly.

I did give the stock idea some thought but I must have about a gallon of frozen stock in the freezer already so passed on this occasion - normally I'd use them though! :p

Understandable. Since starting to try and be "sensible" about using up spare bits of chicken/beef/etc for stock I've amassed a very "unsensible" amount of stock in the freezer too :p

Has anyone tried making buffalo wings in an air fryer? And if so do they come out better than oven?

I haven't but have you tried the Serious Eats method me and Rich L have discussed lately? The results are pretty awesome as long as you are very sparing of the baking soda/salt compared to the original recipe.

I have indeed.

I need to properly try the steam them first method as well. Steam for 10mins, in the fridge for a few hours then in the oven.

This is an understandable fear, and this is why when I'm merely testing the waters of a new area, I limit myself to just the odd couple of wings at a new place to see what the quality is like.

Definitely swing by Chick n Ribs. Even when they aren't fresh, they are on the better side of average. Just don't get the ribs from there... no good!

Chicken shop is definitely a great place to fill up on some chicken.

Most definitely. I was in the USA for a year, and the 'wing culture' is something we need to bring over here. However, buffalo wings with ranch sauce can stay stateside as far as I'm concerned!

Smoking goat
Patty & bun

Both amazing

I'll check them out!

Link? I'd love to do more of it at home. Lidl's also do a lot of wings for very cheap too... I've been tempted in the past but I know I'll always end up just making them asian style. Nothing wrong with that of course!

My experience was that they were a little salty and I could taste the baking powder so I'd personally suggest halving the quantities of both in the recipe. Rich L also halved the quantities and reported that it was awesome :)
