How long would it take you to earn a top footballer’s salary?

i remember when joey barton got arrested for having a scuffle in mcdonalds (probably not far off a decade now) and adidas scrapped their contract with him. they were paying him £50k p/a just for wearing their boots.

to put it in perspective, comparing barton to ronaldo is like comparing white lightining to a vintage red

Its still a very good white lightning though! ;) What does that make the likes of ordinary folk? Muddy puddle water squeezed from a sock into a glass? hehe

1308 years. Do I win?

Hmm...I earn 54% of the national average wage. I'm even below the global average wage.

54% of the national average puts me below the poverty line. It doesn't seem that way to me. I have very low overheads - no children, no car, no drinking, no smoking, no social life and a very, very small mortgage due to being lucky enough to be able to buy a house at a very low price (years ago, before house prices got ridiculous). I've even saved enough to not have to constantly worry about possible emergencies I couldn't previously afford to deal with, like my freezer breaking. I'm doing OK, which is nice. I may even buy some new hardware, just as a fun toy.

And then I come here and see rich people complaining about paying a higher rate of tax on some of their income and, of course, blaming the poor for everything and pretending that everyone could be rich if only they tried a little. It's laughable, really. Not a clue in sight.

And no, that doesn't mean I want to kill everyone with anything and force everyone to live in abject poverty in ditches, blah blah blah. Silly people.

I don't care if someone gets paid more than I'd be paid in 20 lifetimes because they're good at football. I think it's rather strange, but hey ho. He's not eating my food. My gas bill isn't higher because he's paid silly money. I don't have to buy the tickets and merchandise that funds his wages. I think his skill is hugely over-valued, but it doesn't really affect me.

A glass? Luxury! We drank from a folded up newspaper scavenged from the landfill if we were lucky!

Why is there always hate on footballers for how much they earn? There are plenty of people in the entertainment industry actors/musicians etc who earn just as much if not more. Yet people only seem to single out footballers.

cos the ratio between what they do to earn and what they actually earn is bigger, at least in my opinion. it may take practice and fitness to do the job, but musicians sell their CDs and merchandise and "Creatively" write music. Then there's actors, who spend their lives studying human emotion and bringing entertainment to millions through a lot of self sacrafice some even lose out on massive amounts of family time to keep up with filming schedules. Also and whether this is true or not, and I am sure for some of them it isn't, a lot of footballers are just plain stupid.

On your current salary, it would take you 331 years to earn Cristiano Ronaldo's annual wage.

So which Countries government are we burning down first? :-)

He drives an Aston martin :) I think he can easily be in that territory! *awaits eyedot to come in with his f40 on the driveway*

540 years for me, on ronaldo..

That means nothing, you can buy an Aston Martin for 30k, doesn't mean you earn 300k ;)

What would be more interesting is how your wage compares to a League 1 / 2 player.

If I look at people in my field at the absolute top they are earning similar wages to the top footballers and with share options they can probably match sponsorship deals for overall earning potential.

By comparison you still have to be a very talented footballer to play League football yet assuming these are reasonably accurate figures....

The average salary in League One is between £1.700 and £2.500
The average salary in League Two is between £1.300 and £1.500.

and assuming a 15 year career it's not outside the realms of possibility for people to match these wages over a 30 year career.
