LG G3 **discussion**

@tals I had the device for just under a week and I found it to be quite laggy and it ate through the battery quite quickly when the screen was on. The G3 was excellent on standby however that 5.5" QHD chomped through the battery.

Even with Nova installed the lag was present when going in and out of applications and I found it unacceptable.

I did just what you're thinking of doing and moved over to the Z3 and I haven't looked back since.

The G3 camera however is slightly better than the Z3.

I regret buying the G3.

For a "mobile" device the battery life is rubbish. I purchased it hoping that i would be able in a day to maybe watch a movie or 2, do some emails, surf the net, make some phone calls.

No chance you could do all that. 3 hours(ish) screen on time and then have to plug it back in.

Also despite having followed lots of advice on how to get rid of the lag (including installing Nova Launcher), it is still occasionally laggy.

I have the 2GB version, and dont think its enough. I use a program called autoguard blackbox that works as a dash cam. On my Nexus 4 it worked a treat, ran in the background and i could still do other stuff on the phone. With the G3 and autoguard running the phone grinds to a halt.

Not happy, and dont understand all the awards its won. The main selling point for me is the camera which is admittedly quite good with a fast auto focus, but zooming in causes a lot of noise to appear on the image. I thought it would be better for 13MB.

After a few weeks of ownership i am seriously temped to take it to CEX or similar and upgrade to a Note 4 (or just ask the wife for my Nexus back!).

I've been considering moving to either an LG G3 or Xperia Z3 for the last few weeks. Could anyone tell me if all the 32GB versions use the Snapdragon 805? I was thinking I may buy one through a well known vendors German channel. I know they have 3GB ram compared to the 16GB version.

Secondly I quite like messing around with custom roms, is it easy to root / unlock the G3? and is there quite a good scene for development?

Thanks,

It's the easiest handset I've ever rooted tbh as long as its not on Lollipop when you try to do it. One program on my desktop (Purpledrake) rooted it for me in minutes then I used Flashify to flash TWRP.

Done.

There are also hundreds of roms out there of which I've tried a few but ended sticking with one in particular when it ticked all boxes.

I bought one off the rainforest in December and had it for about a month and I have to say I never really warmed to it.
My first impression coming from an S5 was the screen was amazing - and it was. Videos looked brilliant and colours were very accurate and punchy without being oversaturated like with the Samsungs.

But after a few weeks of use I just started to grow tired of it. Niggles started to creep in, battery life wasn't spectacular and the Lollipop update was the final straw.
I suffered the same problems that have bee dotted over the forums about random crashes and overheating (and thusly high battery consumption).

But as I say the 5.0 update did it for me. It was like wading through treacle even to do the most medial of tasks, I found WhatsApp was the slowest but maybe this is just because I use it the most. The other major downside (which may have been fixed now I don't know) was that BBC iPlayer did not work after the update - a problem that LG have had before.
Having been with Samsung I totally understand the frustration of waiting for what seems an absolute age for Android updates but in hindsight I'd rather wait and have updates that work than be in LG's camp and release them before they are fully functioning.

I'm not a hater who's going to say don't buy it but just giving my experience. I also came to the conclusion that it was too big for a phone. I was firmly in the Android big phone camp but having recently acquired an 8 inch tablet I figured a 5.5 inch screen phone was a touch unnecessary, so I plumped for a Z3 Compact and so far so good!

I was also disappointed with the G3 performance , got shot of mine and got a note 4 best move I did beast of a phone.

Plan on buying one in next week or so and best price I have seen is ****** £299 for phone in black although the white is currently £361 and thats the one I was looking for. It was £299 over the weekend but seems to have jumped up in price.

the german large retailer site is about £338 for the 3GB RAM & 32GB version. Thinking that may be the best option?

Is there anywhere else that you would recommend?

I'm not keen on them either. Shame they have taken away the option to select different styles of hotkeys. Does seem to have made the phone more responsive though.

Hmm may have noticed that, or it's just placebo I've never really struggled with lag outside of it just being Android and having Facebook and Messenger installed sucking 100mb just because :D

Don't get me wrong I like the lollipop icons but just wish they weren't LGs Version, I would also like the status bar :L Might be worth flashing KK and going xposed.

e; Yep, this is definitely smoother, apps seem to terminate smoother.

Threw rooted Lollipop 5.0 on my G3. (20H)

Very very nice, shame about the battery drain. Hoping it calms down a bit :/

I've noticed the battery drain as well. Hope it is just a temp issue and sorts itself out. I have drained the battery and Will leave it on charge over night and see how it goes tomorrow.

Standby the battery is great..

It's just when you start using the phone the 2K display just eats the battery. It doesn't help that LG are using the SD801 as opposed to the SD805

Had my update a couple of days ago. Up 'til then I was getting increasingly frustrated with the stuttering when the phone was under load. It seems to have improved this quite a bit to a point where I'm happy with the performance again. That said, as good a phone as it might be I'm never buying a phone without seeing it's screen-on time again. I moved from a Nexus 4 to this phone hoping the 3000mAh+ battery would get me some more use but it's not the significant jump in battery life I was hoping for.
