Hi, I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this so I apologise in advance!

In September of 2014 whilst playing a lovely Sunday League football match I was hacked down in Charlie Adam-esque fashion by some thug. The result was me hopping off the pitch in agony and missing the rest of the match.

The pain was in my ankle and pretty darn bad.

I sat at the side of the pitch and took off my boot and sock. By the time the match was over I could walk without much pain and drove home. However, a few hours later after I'd had a bath my foot swelled up like a small balloon with a localised baseball size swelling directly over where the pain was.

To cut a long story short I never went to get it checked out as by the time the swelling had gone down it was improving every day and I was actually hopeful of being ok within 3-4 weeks. I've had a couple of injuries before and this always seemed to be the case.

Fast forward to now and I dont get pain in the ankle unless I really force it in certain directions.

I went to see a sport therapist this week who told me I'd had ligament and tendon damage and there was also evidence of 2 fractures - but theres nothing anyone can do about those now since its been so long....

doh!

She did some treatment over 2 sessions to break down scar tissue and get rid of debris in the join, and basically said there's nothing more she can do and I should just go back to playing football.

Now to me my ankle doesn't feel quite right. Whether that's just stiffness from not being used a lot over the last few months I'm not sure. But I feel very scared about going back and it just snapping the first time I get poleaxed.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge in this sort of thing?

I'm assuming that the healing process will be over by now and the discomfort im feeling is from general non use/stiffness?

I can run fine without any pain and also on rouge terrain without any feeling of weakness.

A bit of advice from someone with any experience in these matters would be great! Thanks!

It's not particularly medical advice just asking what others have had happen, ish.

Basically see a doctor, don't take a sports therapists word for it, there are some great physios out there, there are also many completely inept ones out there who haven't got a clue.

Get a doctors opinion, gp may/may not refer you to a specialist to just check how it is before getting a recommendation to resume sports.

I think a lot depends on the physio. I got crunched in a tackle a couple of years back. I could still run and stuff afterwards, and probably made it worse by doing so, but at the time was studying and could not afford to see a physio. I've been going to one since October (only a couple of times a month) and she's worked wonders - strengthened the joint and all the way up that leg.

But I've had physio on other things previously and they've just whacked their ultrasound machine on it and left me to it, which does naff all. See a GP for a recommendation to be on the safe side, but it's also worth shopping around to find a good physio.

You can talk about injuries, just don't offer medical advice. By all means share your experiences.

And Doofer - that wouldn't be a sly dig would it, towards a perfectly acceptable thread?!

Ah ok, I'm sorry - I didn't know medical threads weren't allowed.

I suppose I'd better go see my GP then....thanks for the replies chaps.

I injured my ankle when i was at uni, i stepped off a platform and put my weight through the side of my foot (yes i was drunk). My foot swelled a little and went a tad purple. I did book an appointment to see a Dr but he cancelled it short notice and i never rebooked. It did cause me some soreness when it got used but never really got a full work out until 3 or 4 years later. I played 6 a side football 3-4 times a week for 3 years with no problem. I saw an osteopath about another issue recently (~13 years after the injury) and mentioned it. She took a look and said i had likely fractured it but it healed not quite straight. It feels perfectly fine even when i do loads of MTB. I have learnt over the years to never leave injuries as they wont always heal without help. Funny enough i was seeing the osteopath about a long term injury with my groin which stopped me playing football. Issue was actually my back which she corrected over 6 months :D

I have sprained both of my ankles quite badly. One I stepped off a platform and my foot was half on a piece of timber so my foot twisted with all my weight on it. Then a few moths later I did same to the other. Keep your workspace tidy! :o

Both times my ankle swelled up and I could hardly walk on it for a few weeks. Reading a few of the replies here I am worried i should have seen a doc. They seem fine now though.

The second time I did it we had taken a load of windows out of a house so I had to continue working. Most pain i have experienced, it was horrible. But not like you can leave a customer with no windows in their house.

I can run fine without any pain and also on rouge terrain without any feeling of weakness.

do you encounter any pain and/or weakness running on any other colour terrain? :p

for what it's worth I have had a plethora of sports injuries over the years, some I had checked out, others I didn't.

if the physio says to just get back at the footie then go right ahead. you will probably however always have a bit of discomfort and pain from time to time as the original injury was never treated initially.
I broke my thumb, didn't think I had at the time, and just strapped it up myself. to this day if I get a blow on that area my thumb and wrist will be sore for a few days afterwards

I badly sprained my ankle by rolling over on it. I cant say my sense of balance ever really got back to 100%, but I remember a physio doing a lot of work making sure it was healing right.

I've been told that swelling following my fractured fibula (and tearing all the ligaments) could persist for up to 18 months. If there's no surgical intervention it's physiotherapy all the way to improve range of movement, proprioception and power (in that order).

Good luck with it.
