Best 1440p gaming GPU for £300?

Hey all,

As the title suggests, looking to get a new GPU to replace my AMD Sapphire 7950 I have at the mo. Recently got a 1440p monitor, so I want something that would handle recent games at the resolution no problem (or with as little problems as possible :P) like Far Cry 4 etc. Open to anything, but I want something than runs quiet! Atleast when its idle. I have seen this card has received good reviews; any good?

Just hold onto your 7950 bud, as there should be some newer GPUs coming soon. There really isn't a single card solution that will handle all the modern AAA titles with no problem at your £300 price point.

I realise me saying I wanted it to run games with no problem was a bit OTT haha!, just something that will run them more comfortably, my 7950 lacks the power to run most modern games at 1440 well now. Ive had my mind set as well on upgrading, have been saving for a while! :P.
 
Id do as Greg advised TBH however as currently a 290 would be your best option at around £200 - £250 range but you could get a 290X lightning which IMO is one of the best 290X cards at £282

And this would be fine at 1440p and offer a significant boost over your 7950!

However with AMD about to release upcoming cards soon and assume so with nVidia too prices can only come down slightly more and you never know could get a newer card for around that budget with better performance than what is on offer now. But its the waiting game which is a never ending game lol So do what your heart tells you bro lol.

That 8gb card does look very interesting. I actually will be buying in the next month, so im guessing its worth waiting for these new 290x cards with more memory? They all seem to be in my budget aswell.....

Don't opt for the 8GB variant unless your really considering going crossfire as a current single GPU will never have the grunt to utilise all that memory even with new games that demand more Vram. Don't forget newer games require more grunt also.

Just opt for the lightning if your going 290X

Definitely not going for crossfire, I have the corsair 350D micro atx case, so more than two of these would be a no go I think! I have a sound card tho, so would this fit in ok with that?

Why not a GTX 970? Ive been reading they are as powerful as the 290x but use less power, just curious for peoples opinions

Depends. The 970 can even outperform the 290x in some games. However, look into the whole 3.5GB VRAM issue, there's a large thread :) Some users are reporting that the cards are stuttering when the 3.5GB VRAM limit is reached. However, I reckon this is mostly people who use 2 cards, so a single 970 wouldn't be a terrible option.
 
You could get a 970, I had one at 1080p but I would be a bit weary with 1440p and the vram issues that have come to light.
