Hi all

I bought a z97x 5 gigabyte mobo and a 4590 i5, it's still brand new but I've had a boot loop issue since day one which I'd thought I had solved. So I have no option but to RMA this brand new machine and be with out a pc for an unspecified time which could be very long, what is the cheapest possible board I can buy to test the cpu before I RMA and to use for games like league of legends with my r9 280 until I get my mobo replaced, must be 1150 and as cheap as possible.

Thanks

Your bootloop could possibly be caused by a out of date bios that doesn't support the cpu. You would need a older cpu to be able to flash the bios.

That's a good point. I re-checked the Asrock board. The BIOS version gave a spacific number and not "ALL" like the lesser chips did.
So you could end up with the same issue.

Maybe check the exact Asus board model you have and post that up.

It may be an option to buy a cheap Celeron to update the BIOS.

I have the newest bios(it was released the other day so I flashed it) and unfortunately it made no difference, the computer runs fine in Windows,, games all temps fine, but I just couldn't put up with the boot loop when it returned.

Reseated cpu, tried 2 brand new psu', tried every different memory configuration, tried with no memory in, passed mem test, tried out side of the case with nothing but mobo , cpu psu, checked pins, tried front panel wires. Seems I'm unable to cure it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zj7zAQyglFk&feature=youtu.be here's a video of the boot loop, you have to mind all the sniffling I was ill when I made it lol

You will notice in the video that when the memory leds light up the computer boots, but when no led lights you know it's going to loop.

Thanks for the replies, I really don't want to buy a new mobo, so the one I do buy need to be compatible with this cpu as don't want to buy a celron for updating the bios

So it does actually boot into Windows ? Or not ?

What happens exactly in this boot loop ?

Yea boots to Windows and runs fine, basicly, when it's 1st turned on in the morning it will do what i showed you in the video, but it might turn it's self on and off 2-3 times before it boots to Windows, once in Windows it runs all day.

Press power button once then the above happens

Right

I was asked to look at summet very very similar to this a while back.

It ended up being the CPU fan was plugged into the aux fan plug and NOT the CPU plug.

You could double check this on your set up. ??

Can't tell whether there's any debug leds on the board, what they're indicating, and what (if anything) is happening on your screen.

On my previous board (AsRock Z87 Extreme 6) I also suddenly had start up issues, where I could only sometimes properly boot into Windows (it would get to the spinning dots, then restart ... using fast boot). I was about to RMA it, thinking there was an issue with the board. The debug led indicated some SATA problem, possibly a borked SSD ... though no problems on the Windows end once I managed to boot. I also figured out that not using fast boot, entering the bios, and then continuing on (exit without saving) would always let me through.

But one day I checked the event viewer in Windows (8.1), and noticed lots of errors during startup. I managed to fix some of those, and that solved my boot problems. Wasn't the board after all.

I'm not saying you're having the exact same problem, but it might be worth a look.

Thanks for your suggestions, I changed from fast boot to normal but the fix didn't last, I've tested with no hard drives plugged in, just cpu board and psu, so can't be sata can it?

This board doesnt have led post codes I think it's the z97x 7 that's got that feature, next model up

What if the board was not fit in quite correctly. Some part of it touching the case ?
Would that cause this problem.

Maybe take the board out. Check it over.

Remove all the mounting studs from the case and start all over again.

I fired the cpu board and psu up out side of the case, the only thing I used from the case to do this was the power switch wires etc, still looped :(

Thanks for your help, any more suggestions for a cheapo mobo

Well I know we are meant to point towards the OCUK shop but surely if your after a cheap LGA 1150 just as a temp board. Ebay has to be the place to look.

while your there pick up a cheap Celeron also.

I don't mind ocuk cheapos provided it can run league of legends with out issues, how much are celrons these days and why exactly are they Good for doing bios updates. God I hate typing on phone.....

Well that sorts that out.

When I am working on a board out of a case I have a set of switches and LED's to use as if it was plugged into a case.

What if the case switch is at fault ?
Never heard of it though.

Code:
PC MOTHERBOARD QUICK TESTING SWITCH LEAD SET KIT

search ebay for the above and that's what I have.
