If the bcc did not saturate and practically monoplise the UK TV industry then private companiea would fill that void. The BBC does nothing as far as I can see that couldn't be done by private organisation like ITV or chan4 or sky and so on. Maybe we would have the american network in the UK if it was not for the BBC and century old TV regulations.

Have you actually watched American tv?????

(And I don't mean the high quality stuff produced by expensive subscription services such as hbo etc, but the usual network/cable stuff broken up every 15 minutes by commercials, episodes shown out of order, moved time slots regularly, dropped shows with no warning, endless reruns, poor transmission quality dependent on where you live, inconsistent availability outside of major networks and so it goes on, almost non existent public service broadcasting, atrocious news coverage)

Grow up with American tv and you soon appreciate just how good UK TV actually is.

Many countries also have TVL which is both more pervasive and more expensive than ours, with very little direct return to the consumer. Denmark for example, Germans pay more than we do even if they don't own a TV.

Not really they don't. Partnership (The BBC owns its own multiplex Arqiva owns two others and they operate as a consortium) and regulation (Arqiva have to broadcast public service television services, so the BBC from all its transmitters) agreements mean Arqiva makes most of its Transmission money from commercial TV, Radio and Mobile operators.
