Morning,

I'll be landing at JFK at around 10:30pm-11:30pm on Saturday evening, from there I'm sure I'll be stuck trying to clear security for a good hour or two which means I'll be out and on my way at say 12:30am Sunday morning.

I then need to get to our hotel which is right by Exchange Place (Path) in Jersey City. A taxi to Manhattan is fixed at $56 but as we are just outside the island and with a toll to pay it would be closer to $100, same with Uber especially at the time of night.

This leaves me with the option of public transport. As far as I can tell I have a few options;

1) Get the JFK AirTrain to Howard Beach and then get the A train (Blue) all the way to WTC, change to the Path and head 1 stop across to Exchange Place.

2) Get the JFK AirTrain to Jamaica Center and then get the E train (Blue) all to way to WTC, change to the Path and head 1 stop across to Exchange Place.

3) Get the JFK AirTran to Jamaica Centre and then get the LIRR to Penn Station. From there I must find a way to WTC to get the Path but there doesn't appear to be an obvious easy way.

4) Taxi ($56) to WTC and then change to the Path and head 1 stop across to Exchange Place.

We had planned to get 7 day Path ($30) and 7 day metro ($30) cards for the week anyway so option 1 and 2 should effectively be 'free' or close enough to. Option 4 is the most expensive, option 3 is probably the quickest way to Manhattan but then we are stuck trying to get to WTC.

I need to factor in that we'll have just come off an 8 hour flight, and spent 2 hours fighting security. My main concern with option 1 and 2 is the safety of the trains at that time of the morning (especially option 1 which goes through Brooklyn).

TL : DR - 12:30am on Sunday, need to get from JFK to Jersey City.

Option 2 is the best by far. The trains are actually very safe in NY , people are much more alert and considerate. (if you were talking about LA then maybe you would have cause to be concerned!)

The train journey from the airport into NY is actually pretty nice and relaxing I found.

Why is option 2 better than option 1? Option 2 looks to be a fair longer route (basically avoiding Brooklyn) than option 1.
