Meet AMD's Radeon R9 300 Gang

So no they can't just raise the clocks without doing nothing if they want it to fight the 980. 1200 is the minimum base clock they need, and the hawaii can not do that on every chip. Also they haven't just rename the cards to 380/X, they renamed the chip to Grenada from Hawaii, so its clearly a new rev.

Disagree, if it's the same tech on the core, doesn't matter what they call it, it's simply a refresh.

A lot of optimism for this new range of cards from AMD. I haven't had an AMD card now for some time, but will be watching these with some interest.

refresh =/= rebadge

7970->280X basicly a rebadge...but if 280X was battling the 780?

Because they need to pull this sort of performance upgrade to battle the 980.
At least 20%. As i wrote earlier, the hawai is not capable of the clock needed.

We don't expect the chip to be any more energy efficient at its final clocks
TPU seem confused about the meaning of efficiency! Given they are confused about almost everything they report on though I'm not surprised. If they meant not lower max power draw then write that.

Read this on Anands forums last night. Add salt to taste.
At least they're open about it being speculation and rumour!

Looking forward to seeing what 390/X has to offer..
Sharp increase of rumourbait normally means we're getting closer to something actually materialising.
Got cash burning a hole in my pocket for a new card and I'm resisting 290X or 980 to see what these are like in the real world..

Just goes to show the lack of progression, AMD don't even need a new card to take on the 980. Looks like their refresh card (Refresh 290X) will do that. So those of us wanting a real upgrade need to wait for GM200 / 390X, and that's likely still 28nm :(

Arrrgh GPU's were never this boring in the past. I might just wait until 2016, would really hope by that point we will have fully new architecture on a die shrink..

The plus side is that this will save me some money :D

Meh..

Good to see AMD have improved on the cooler if this article holds any substance.... And a 1200Mhz 380X will be epic. Nice one AMD. :)

If that means I can whack a 380x into my current crossfire setup to get HDMI 2.0 and/or DP 1.3 I will be more than happy.

So if I am guessing right, the 380/380X are just gonna be upgrade targeted at 7950/7970 users (not that it doesn't make sense since it's labelled as a 80 rather than 90 card), similar to 970/980 targetting 670/680 users to upgrade.

Guess people who already got 290/780 level cards would have to stay put and wait and see 390/390X will do if they eventually come about...

Nooo this is a total snooze fest. Nvidia launched the 980 5% better than GTX 780 Ti, all AMD have to do is tidy up the 290X (2013) to beat it..

Couldn't get more boring, GM200 / 390X will be the only cards really worthwhile and GM200 will likely cost up to £1000..

This is the worst the GPU space has ever been. Lack of progression, no node change..

Basically we've got another year of milking until truly 'new' cards appear. The midrange will be old rehashed cards again like we saw with 7970 > 280X / GTX 680 > GTX 770..

Nobody should be congratulating AMD / Nvidia imho :p Except their financial departments of course..

Yea...it's like watching two kids throwing sand at each other back and forth and not going anywhere :p

But if AMD did rebadge the 290 as 380 and price it at as the same price bracket as the 960, then the joke would be on Nvidia with them only providing a 670 level performance card at the same price point, no matter how much they bang about efficiency :p
