So I am looking for a tablet - have wanted one for ages. I was set on the Galaxy Tab, but the NVIDIA Shield looks amazing also. I will mainly use it for watching TV shows during the commute. Roughly the same price, balanced by the larger screen on the Tab, versus the game playing prowess of the Shield with the controller etc.

Anyone know how the Shield screen compares to the Tab?

Which to go for?

It's not as good on the Shield (tab S screen right now is seriously impressive, one of those see it to believe it improvements at 10"+) but it's not the same device really (shield internals are better). I read a few days ago there will be a new shield I think soon but there will be a new tab by then too consider Samsungs tablet turnover. A tab is a large device, there is quite a difference between 8 and 10.5 (there's a fairly decent price gap too isn't there?) but overall either will probably suit you.

If you're not playing anything too intense you can plug an xbox controller into a tab and have the same experience iirc. Someone cracked the nVidia end client on android too iirc which might be important to you.

Haven't got a shield but have a Tab S 8.4 and love it.

I use it like you and watch shows/films on the train and its the perfect size really, plays everything I throw at it and excellent battery life so can leave it in my bag all week and won't need to charge it till friday evening.

I have a Moko case for my 10.5, very well wearing and the clasp is strong, wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

I have the shield and it has been excellent. Got to love the instant android updates, and this thing is seriously fast for gaming.

Weird comparison though fair difference in size between the two.

The comparison was on cost really, so from that perspective not weird at all :)

Thanks for the post, although I am still torn. Not an easy decision.

Kona is right - the GPU is pretty meh and if you have a requirement for high end android games then it won't be top tier (although I too use mine as a hearthstone machine, and netflix. sweet netflix).

I got this case, note that the sides are exposed and this might not suit your environment etc...

well I got it in white but amazon's a pain with URLs :)

I think the Shield is around the limit of what I'd consider portable. It isn't the lightest, and it doesn't have the best battery life compared with other tablets around this size but it is a powerhouse and their Android version is very close to the stock experience you'd get with a Nexus device.

They've added some nice customisations like a system level full screen mode (the same as the 'immersive' mode that some apps use to give full screen) which can be toggled from the notifications bar. It also includes a stylus which is surprisingly good in that the system can differentiate between stylus's presses and your finger/palm. Using something like OneNote it's sufficiently accurate that you could use it as a notebook replacement for taking handwritten notes.
