Nvidia rakes in record revenue.

When you look through history between nVidia and AMD, you can see what is what and where we are heading.

AMD share prices

nVidia share prices

AMD R&D through the years

nVida R&D through the years

nVidia spends and extra 110 million on R&D and this shows what commitment to the future is. AMD have slashed R&D and if they don't turn it around, they look bang in trouble. Hopefully someone will buy them out and bring them to a competitive state. nVidia and Intel have it far too easy.

The Even though AMD seems to be spending less on R&D they seem to be keeping up with Nvidia. Nvidia aren't ahead at all. It's the same tit for tat as usual. Still, at least AMD don't lie openly to their "customers". :)

Yeah I can see if AMD can't keep up where we are heading is an Nvidia that charges even more than the quite ridiculous amount of money they charge now :p

I wish there was a third option, neither company is desirable and their fanboys even less so..

Oh Samsung plz make GPU's :o

Could a Don close this one please.

Merge them?

I notice there is no mention of the GTX 970 fiasco, if I was an investor I would want to hear what went wrong and how it will effect the bottom line.

GTX970 is probably still doing incredibly well in the OEM sector where price/performance/TDP are all important factors. Forum enthusiasts who obsess over benchmarks, don't mind lots of heat and noise and get their knickers in a twist over minor hardware technicalities are a tiny fraction in the grand scheme of things, unfortunately for AMD.

I would say in the last 12 months products wise NVidia have been a huge disappointment.

Their 9 series although good at 1080p can not beat old AMD cards @2160p

The GTX 970 fiasco is a shocker of their tech team taking short cuts.

If I was a teched up investor I would be saying that NVidia are actually skimping on R & R and just sitting on their laurels taking the money. This is a very short sighted approach.

I can see NVidia getting into some serious trouble and losing a lot of market share if they don't come up with some real highend cards (Maxwell Titan does not count as it will be too expensive) in the next 12 months.

Missed this thread and posted in Kaap's (that will soon be closed) but not surprised to read this news at all. The 980 and 970 have had fantastic sales and in fairness, more by a long way than I was expecting. I felt the increase was a little meh but seeing some bench threads and how cool these run, I can see why a few ditched the 290/X/780/780Ti for a 970/80.

Anyways, what impresses me about nVidia is how quickly they can get things out and up and running. Take G-Sync for example.... It has been an option to buy a G-Sync enabled monitor for well over a year and iirc, they spoke about it for a couple of months before we could actually get our hands on the module and DIY it if we wanted. AMD "STILL" don't have a freesync monitor running on consumer machines and they were talking about it at the same time as nVidia (they showcased the laptop windmill). Now of course it has been said that G-Sync owners have paid a massive premium and for that I don't argue but like anything that has no competition....You want it, you pay for it.

They seem to have DX12 running very nicely already (too early to tell of course) but from the Star Swarm stress test that Oxide previously made for AMD's Mantle, we can see that DX12 is far superior on nVidia over its rival. Sure that can change before DX12 is officialy released and I would certainly hope so but with AMD's R&D diminishing year on year, have they stretched themselves too much? Maybe the huge redundancies are starting to show in the manning levels allocated to certain projects?

.........

I hope you know that you've most likely been removed from the 2015 Christmas card list by Gregster for that statement.

Only joking but I agree with your points. For some reason however, I feel that Nvidia will have something to bring to the table. They have always been prepared apart from the DX10 spec thing but even that worked out in their favour.

Whilst I agree with some of what you are saying, share prices and R&D spend dictate a different story. Nvidia are on top of the game, we may not like aspects of it and it may change but they are the facts.

Nvidia are on top of their game in terms of profit margins and business strategy, but def not in pushing performance advancements or customer relations.

It's a shame that there is only AMD to fight against Nvidia, as they just don't have the budget and Nvidia can keep them at arms length while dictating the prices.

I wish a third company with the resources could shake up this duo-logy that we have.

Maybe one day Intel's IGPU will be so good that we simply won't need to bother with Nvidia / AMD anymore. That would be lovely. A truly small powerful all in one Intel system would get my money for sure. At the rate Intel are improving in graphics it may one day happen. Especially if Nvidia carry on with only adding 5% - 10% per gen..

If I can boast about using 2 year old Titans and other people can say the same about their 780ti or 780s this basically means that NVidia have not come out with anything better for the last 2 years. If they are spending a lot on R & D investors need to be very concerned as it is not being spent very wisely.

Where is the card from NVidia that can annihilate a 2 year old Titan ?

I would say NVidia's business strategy is actually quite poor.

It reminds me of IBM and the original PC, look what happened to them.

I wander if the a market that can be charged $1000 > $2000 for a consumer graphics card will one day eventually turn on them.

The milking is almost out of control, Titan Z was just awful lol.

Hopefully a die shrink (Eventually) will finally give us some progression in performance VS price at all levels, low - mid - high end..

let's hope AMD bring it with the 390X and force Nvidia to start making a bigger leap in performance. It's a lot like David and Goliath though.. Or a midget being held at arms length whiles being punched in the face..

Hopefully the underdog will have it's day though. It would be great for the market..

Or even better, a third player..

I fully agree with what you are saying, Nvidia are getting it all their own way at the moment and have no need to push(I am sure AMD and Nvidia have some sort of agreement!). We need to break this cycle and a third player would be nice.

NVIDIA have caught on that selling high specced beastly cards is not where the money is at. Selling the 980 for the price it's at, while being probably cheaper to make than a 770 is a winner profit wise.

Because there is no competition to push them, so they do not have to.

They are not here to make us happy, they are here to make money and they are. That is business unfortunately.

*Please note I am not defending anything, just pointing out the facts as I see them.
