Do you arrive early/stay late at work?

I work up to about 45 hours max a week (salaried, 37.5 hour contracted week)..

But that's only because I pick jobs that are a real challenge.. as soon as I get myself into a cushy number where you could kick back with a 'money for old rope' attitude, I then leave for another job that will give me something to challenge me..

That might sound crazy, and quite frankly the stress from frustration will no doubt shorten my life, but I am who I am.. I'd rather 'enjoy' the highs and lows of being 'involved' in my work whilst still having a good work/life balance than use work as a vehicle between weekends and spend all my money down the boozer.. and power to anyone that does that.. as long as you are happy!

I arrive 15mins early and often do 1.5hrs O/T every day except, Friday. My hours are 0730 to 1630. The 30mins extra we do, Monday to, Thursday comes off of, Friday so we finish at 1330. Sometimes I do 4 hours, Saturday too. So it's either 40 hours, 46 or 50 hours a week.

lol this place gets worse.

you've clearly made a simple typo, but that's ok.

Better is that word you were trying to spell, Sppok. You're about as close to a highly success person as you will ever experience in your lifetime in the real world :)

Already successful so i have nothing to worry about.

Next.

I get in early to beat the traffic (40 mile commute).
I leave pre rush hour some days and others I wait until rush hour has passed.

I get paid overtime. Only single rate, but my previous employer (who were a **** to work for) did not.

I find i am more productive if i catch a faster train in the morning and arrive later because i am less depressed and annoyed from the train journey. I also get more sleep because I struggle to get to sleep before 2am and some times later. I am meant to work 37.5 hours a week but I try get in late and then leave early. I may look bad but I do work outside of work hours without getting paid and don't often take a full lunch. Plus if there is a problem I am meant to stay for an hours after work and fix it often for free and be available outside of hours 7am-11pm remotely. Often i will remote in on sunday evening and make sure there is no problems to prevent having to wake up early on a monday with a problem.

Sadly it is 90% of the time not how much work you are doing, but how much work it looks like you are doing.
I realise this is stupid, but then so is the average person :(.

What would be interesting in this thread is for people to post what they do for a living.

A lot of contracts these days include clauses such as "expectation to work extra hours where relevant as and when the demands of the business increase" etc etc.

I am a design engineer.
That clause in the contract really cannot be held with much regard.
I don't mind working hard and I am almost never off ill, but there is a fine line between getting walked all over by working for free, and being seen as a 'keen team player'.
My current company is just keeps giving me overtime. I love being hourly (effective basic rate £3.4k above the salaried job too!).

I interpret the clause you mentioned as doing a little extra now and then to meet deadlines.
Working for an hour free every day is not the same as 'extra where relevant'.
If you consistently work extra for free, you are either a top level manager where you really have to, or you are being pooed on.

I dislike it when people expect me to do extra because 'you aren't doing anything tonight and I have kids/plans'. So the **** what!? Keep work and personal life separate! (Sorry I have gone off on a tangent rant haha).

I'm a trainer for a courier company, and I have one of those "demands of the business" type contracts.

If I'm training in Slough I might need to leave home at 6am and might not get back until 7pm but then my boss wouldn't expect me to do a full day in the office on Friday for example. Sometimes I do late night depot and hub tours after a full day in work that last until midnight, but again I'd not be expected to do a full soft the next day. I have a good working relationship with my boss, she doesn't take the mick and neither do I.

Unenforceable.

They could write "We have the right to slap you in the face when a west wind is blowing" in your contract if they liked.

Doesn't mean it would stand up at an ET.

Possibly, but most people accept these clauses as part of their job.

I'm a fraud analyst. Our detection systems are live and if we start getting hit badly on the weekend or the evenings then I can be called up, though I can remedy situations from anywhere, as long as I have my laptop and wifi or my phone to use as a wifi hotspot. I just take overtime for that. It is part of my role.

Contracted for 42.5 hours a week, usually end up working 45 a week and when I have a big project on I can end up working a bit more (technically the skys the limit).
I get paid for the extra time that I'm there, and there is so much to do that its hard not to spend more time at work. I have relaxed start time and lunch time which isn't too bad.

I get some but not much recognition for working extra hours, it does enable me to get more done tho which counts for a lot.

Depends, the joys of flexi. Core hours are 9.30am-3:45pm Monday to Thursday and 9.30am-3pm on Fridays.

I also get paid for any over time (nominal 37 hour week) as well, very good for a desk based design engineer role!

My hours vary, during busy periods I've done 48 hours but the norm is around 37-39 hours a week.
