Question about Noctua industrial 3000 fans

Hi all,

i have a fractal design r4 case which has an inbuilt fan controller switch on the front with settings of 5v, 7v and 12v.

I was looking to change the fans that came with it for something with a bit more oomph. So thought about the Noctua Industrial 3000 Noctua NF-A14 IndustrialPPC 3000RPM PWM 140mm High Performance Fan.

My question is would these work ok off the fan controller and would they be pretty quite if i kept them at 5 or 7v most of the time? I'm a little worried about the power requirments as they are not supposed to be run off a mobo header so didn't want to fry my fan controller.

Also are there any better fans i should be looking at that are near silent at low rpm but push loads of air when needed at 12v?

They are way more fan than needed for case fans. Something like the Phanteks PH-F140SP would work just fine. Some have LEDs, but the LED is on it's own power lead so can be used or not.

Cheers Doyll,

I'll have a look at the Phanteks. Can i ask why the Noctuas are more than needed if i can cut down the voltage then they will run slower wont they? Are they not really case fans?

thanks again

Using NF-A14IPPC fans is like getting a D9 Cat to till a small garden. :D
You won't know it has LEDs if they are not turned on.

Too bad Thermalright TY-140 series doesn't have a square fan. I use lots of them and have even cut them square for Define R2, R3 & R4 front fans.

The TY-147 is now being replaced by the TY-147 A. Same fan but now is 300-1300rpm instead of 700-1300rpm. Problem is TY-147 are sold out and TY-147 A are not yet in stock. If you found some I could cut them square for you.

The reason for the curved sides is it improves airflow on those sides.
The reason for flat sides is so fan will fit nicely over RAM and fit inside of case.

Best of both worlds would be TY-147 A with a round housing, a square housing, and the one they have now.

In case you're interested I just swapped out my Alpenfohn wingboost 2 140mm rad fan for the 3000 noctura one and core temps on 'silent' have dropped by a fair margin, from around 31 to low to mid 20's. The minimum speed of the Alpenfohn was around 500 using NZXT's software and the Noctura hovers around 900. The Noctura is a little louder on silent but bejesus can it cool when it's cranked up. I guess you'd only ever need it if your computer was stuck in a corner in the middle of summer but I guess I it's good to have power on tap.
