Hey All,

I am new to these forums, well posting, Ive been searching through them for a few weeks looking at other posts to similar questions and have found a lot of helpful guides and opinions on builds and components so first of all thanks for all that!

I have had my current gaming rig for around 7 years now I believe and it has lasted me very well but its getting on a bit and I am now in a position to upgrade to something new. I have spent a fair bit of time researching and looking into new gear for buying and I have made my mind up on the majority of the parts but im struggling with the processor really.

When I bought my current PC from new it cost around 1600-1700 I believe and was, at the time, relatively future proof. I did have to upgrade the GFX card to an nVidia 460 GTX which I am currently running. The processor is an AMD phenom II X4 955 3.2Ghz with 4GB of ram.

Im probably looking to spend around the same today for a similar setup which will hopefully last a good few years.

I will put up the parts list that I intend to buy and my reason, if you have any input good or bad it would be very much appreciated as I am somewhat out of the loop these days when it comes to some bits.

So here we go:

Case: Corsair Vengence C70
I LOVE the look of thise case, plus it has handles, thats awesome for me! Plus the basics it has ideal places for cable management and airflow and generally a nice looking case.

PSU: Branded 1000w
Cant mention the name of the PSU as its name is also a competitor so well leave it at that, ideally a more powerful one as wouldnt mind going SLI with a 980 in time when I need to.

CPU: Intel i7-5930K
Now, this is my original choice for a processor, ill explain my conundrum below

CPU Cooler: Corsair H110i GT
Love the look of this, was going to for the H100 but for the little extra I like the idea of it filling the case a bit more and just looking "beefier"

Motherboard: Noooooo idea, will need help here!

RAM: 16GB (4x4GB) Corsair Vengence Pro
First one that popped up really, dont mind what kind it is as long as its decent, not sure about frequencies though!

GFX Card: MSI / EVGA nVidia GeForce 980 GTX
Looking to go all out and get nVidias big one for the PC, considering im running a GTX 460 now, this will be a huge step up, planning to SLI in time when it needs it

HDD1: Samsung EVO SSD 250GB
Heard SSDs are great for main OS drive, can get a brand new one of these for 75 which seems to be a decent price so it has taken my pick for primary drive.

HDD2: Western Digital Caviar BLACK 1T
Again heard this is ideal for installing the likes of steam on and running games from so sounds like a good second HDD.

So there we have it, that was my rough guide.

Ideally advice on a processor/mobo/ram combo would be greatly appreciated. Someone I know suggested to me that the i7-4790K would be fine for me, which may be true, but if things are moving forward to the X99 and 2011 socket way I would like to just go for that now and ideally go future proof, hense the idea of the i7-5930k now.

I know the 5930k has more cores, less Ghz and more PCI lanes, but do these really count and / or will they count in a few years ahead.

As I say folks I would really appreciate and advise and tips you lot in the know might have in regards to my build.

Many thanks for your time!

Adam

Hi and welcome,

What is this PC to be used for?

If it is just gaming then a 4790K will be quicker as it has a higher core speed out of the box,

The black edition board has a 5yr warranty and an exchange program to get you a newer board within 3yrs - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18631511

The EVGA PSU is enough for SLI GTX9780s, it is made by Superflower and has a 10yr warranty.

The i7 5820K has less PCI-E lanes and a slightly reduced core speed than the 5930K, but for 2-way SLI its still ample.

Hi and welcome,

What is this PC to be used for?

Primarily gaming, haent bought anything new for awhile as the pc is struggling a bit now but i think its down to the hard drive possibly as it just doesnt run as smooth as it used to?

Well I have added two suggestions above and some pointers.

And one more in all white,

This PSU is 200mm long, the Corsair C70 takes 180mm long PSUs, hence the change of case. But you cant see the PSU anyway in this case, it is in its own compartment.

Many thanks for the multiple basket options there stulid!

Have to admit im not overly keen on the white look lol but it would probably look very smart once all built.

Can I ask with the difference with the 4790 and 5820, is the 5820 worth the extra step up against the 4790k? I notice these two processors are only around £50 difference in cost between the two, then suddenly the 5930K shoots up an extra 150 odds.

I just dont want to buy the wrong processor and wish in a years time id gone a different route, I hope I dont sound repetitive(sp?) I guess I just want to spend the money wisely now.

The 4790K is quad core with Hyperthreading = 8 logical threads/cpus.

The 5820K is a hex core with Hyperthreading = 12 logical threads/cpus.

But the 4790K has a huge speed (core speed in MHz) advantage over the 5820k, it runs at 4GHz and Turbos up to 4.4GHz, the 5820K is 3.3GHz and Turbos to 3.6GHz.

Games don't make use of all the extra threads that the 5820K has, so thats why the 4790K is quicker for "just gaming" but that doesn't mean the 5820K isn't going to offer an excellent experience.

Cheers for the input and the various system configs there, some new options I hadnt considered especially the bundle packs :) Will update soon with some purchases!

Love the look of the cable packs, but daaaaamn, 70 :E
