I need to know the highest tier of GPU I can use with my CPU without it causing issues with bottle necking? My CPU is the AMD Athlon X4 860k Black Edition.

Hi, when looking through the the AMD CPU Gaming PC list, they list the AMD R9 280X and the GTX970 as the top options respectively.

*i hope someone answers this definitively as that's the only way i could think to check, i think if OcUK could sell it with a higher tier GPU they would.

** might try asking in the Customer Service section, if you haven't already :)

Will bottleneck slightly but I'd probably jump onto a second hand HD 7950/HD 7970 for £80 or get a R9 290 brand new for £200 from here.

A friend of mine told me to go for an AMD R9 270X. He told me the CPU could handle that and would not cause a bottleneck. It'll be used for games like SWTOR, World of Tanks, WoW, Rome II and many more. I'm always interested in new games so it'll have to be able to handle most games on fairly good graphics at 1920x1080.

Why not either go for a new R9 285 as one of the cards Stulid suggests, or if you don't fancy that **B Grade** R9 280 at only £110! Then have a think about a new MSI AMD R9 280, it does have 3GB of Vram but does not have the DX12 support that the R9 285 has. Has DX11.2 support, still damm good.

For ££ for performance then the R9 290!

You couldn't have named a worst game list for that CPU.

Just for info, what CPU and GPU should he have gone for Martini1991?

*not trying to trip you up, just want info :)

Pass on the CPU, depends entirely on the budget when he was buying, so unless he's got a time machine it's moot.

For GPU, I think an R9 270X is a good match with the Athlon he's got. As far as I can see, that's a decent balance.

Though I'd sooner get an FX6300 with an R9 270X than an Athlon (Even though it's SR versus PD)

But that's overall, specifically the games he's mentioned are CPU intensive (Core for core performance) and the Athlon isn't known for its core for core performance, but it is what it is.

BennettWHU, just thinking on how to save you ££ here...

Considering the answers above, you might think about getting a GPU that that will cause your CPU to be a very slight bottleneck.

Maybe a GTX750Ti

Maybe a R9 270 (not the X version)

Or if you'd prefer a **B Grade**

On this page there are GTX760's and R9 280's both for £110 but they only have a 90 day warranty.

It's a budget build. Should AMD release more powerful CPU's for the FM2+ socket in the future, I'll upgrade. From what I've heard, their new CPU's will be using FM2+ so I should be able to upgrade at some point.

The biggest issue for AMD CPUs (even for the mainstream FX CPU range) is that their per core performance lag very far behind Intel's offering...

If you want reasonable performance and smoothless in those games you play and without breaking the bank, your best chance is trying to look for 2nd hand i5 2500K bundle (CPU+motherboard+8GB memory) and a 2nd hand HD7850. Should cost something between £200-£250 in total.

Or to take it one step at a time, get the 2nd hand 7850 (which is actually R7 265 before the rebranding) for around £60 first, and then try overclocking your existing CPU...and upgrade to Intel i5 in the future if you got the budget or opportunity to do so.
