Why should we have to follow the rules of a religion we don't follow? It's forbidden for Muslims to draw mohammed so they don't draw him. Non-muslims can draw whatever they want.

The crux of the matter and this is problaby something none of us are religiously educated enough to know the real answer is, why is the Islamic faith the only faith in the world currently where we have extremists ready to die and kill for their religion?
.. at present. Many other religions have and will continue to. This is just the current one.
Their faith, not mine, i don't have to observe anything that has to do with them.
They do, in a lot of school pork is no longer allowed and most supermarkets sell Halal chicken only without even asking the public if that's what they wanted, it's effecting change through the back door. Also see many facebook and twitter posts of Muslims deriding our culture of drinking and like posting pictures of legless women to back up the notion that the west is full of debauchery and corruption
Murder is not the answer
Some of them murder, so from your example Islam should be made illegal too?

I am generally of the opinion, that what we are seeing is a reaction to modernity from certain cultures. It's a social/cultural reaction to how modernity and the old faiths are losing their importance.
There is a direct correlation between advanced societies and secularism for example. What they are reacting to is the fact that their societies are becoming more advanced, but this is then instilling western values, which are not in correlation with the values in their religion.
We will probably see our current faiths fade out within the next 500-1000 years. This is how it's worked in the past, so I don’t see why it wont happen in future. For example the first sentient computer for could spring up new religions around the worship of sinthetic inteligence etc...

I think Islam (Christianity, Judaism less so as they seem to be less willing to die for their religion) will get more and more violent as it slowly fades in to obscurity (as all religions do) as that is how the religion is set up to survive. It's a survival instinct inherent in the religion.

This is why we have seen a rise in the BNP and other right wing groups.
Infact, I foresee over the next 5 years or some Europe is going to be a lot more centre right politicaly as a reaction to the current situation.

What's your answer? Appeasement? This is a fundamental clash of Western Culture vs. fundamental Islamic attitudes. It absolutely needs to be met with an unwavering determination to not give in.
If certain people don't like how things are in the Western nations then they are free to not live in them or visit them. The only legitimate complaint you could have against the Muhammad cartoons is that some of them are really poorly drawn and/or not funny, but take your offence elsewhere.
how does that work when two people disagree, who is supposed to give in?
suppose a shia is actually happy to have respectful images of the prophet but a sunni isn't?
suppose a militant athiest type want's to exercise his right to actively criticise religion
how about the apostacy laws/or just general feelings towrads it (as like blasphemy in Islam it isn't a crime per say here) - some muslims will happily encourage someone to convert to Islam yet would often be enraged if one of their own converts away from Islam...
you can't always just go along with other people's beliefs - especially when they come into conflict with those of others
