Hey guys i'm looking for some headphones that are really good sound quality but ones that i can replace the ear cups on down the line.

My ear cups on my current headphones (Beyerdynamic DT990 250ohm's) are none existent pretty much.

Had them for about a year great headphones and i'm looking for a upgrade

Looking for really good sound quality and open headphones also.

I was looking at the Sennhieser HD 650's at the moment, Just not sure if you can replace the ear cups on them.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks, Jamie

What do you mean by ear cups?

The ear cups are usually refer to the hard metal or plastic shell that houses the headphone drivers (speakers) and if you're doing something to require changing those then you have the wrong hobby. :D

If you mean the velour ear pads/cushions then yes, you can buy new ones and change them yourself. You can actually change them on your DT990s too, they cost around £25 on the rainforest website.

I have the HD650 as my main headphone for music and absolutely love them and also have the DT990's, though they are now relegated to their box by the Sennheisers and AKG K702, which I use for gaming. If you do decide to get the HD650, allow yourself a good long listen before deciding they sound dull or veiled because they really aren't. Coming from a bright headphone like the DT990, the HD650 can sound muffled or dull initially but you just need to give your brain time to adjust to the different sound signature and after a few hours you will suddenly realise that the detail is all still there. The sound is just smoother and more relaxed and once you've got used to it there is no going back, these things are addictive. :D

The padding on the headphones around the ears sorry.

Yeah, Thinking about it the HD650's sound like a good choice for me. Think i might get some ear pads also for these DT990's.

Appreciate the feedback guys

As I said, you can buy those for your DT990s for £25 a pair on the rainforest and fit them yourself.

The HD650 also has changeable pads, also available on the rainforest or direct from Sennheiser

I can't recommend the HD650 enough. The tone of these headphones are magical. Headphones can be technically better, but nothing matches the HD650 in terms of tonality. The P7 were fun, lacking mids though.

If you must go closed look into Focal Spirit Classic. Another tonal beauty.

I have seen some reviews of those Focal headphones.Spirit Classic and the professional what are the main differences between them?.....where I could get a demo in London? Cheers.

The Focal Professional is more aggressive. They are hyper detailed with top notch imaging, best imaging I've heard in a closed back. They have good deep strong bass too. They are well balanced top to bottom and on the dryer side.

The classic is more laid back, warmer more sultry. It's a more beautiful sounding headphone IMO. Bass sounds fuller, mods are fuller more intimate and treble is silky smooth.

Never seen them around London. Best chance would be Selfridges in Oxford Street.

I found the HD650 to be a huge upgrade from the DT990.

The sound signatures are very, very different so if you do try them you need to give your brain enough time to adjust. People often describe the HD650 as veiled or muffled but that's usually as a result of coming from a very bright headphone like the DT990 or AKG K/Q7xx and not listening for long enough. The HD650 is actually more resolving than the DT990, it just doesn't throw the detail at you through harsh and sibilant high frequencies.

I thought the DT990 were rubbish for music. Cold sounding with a metalic sound to them. The HD650 is more balanced and like rids said is more resolving. The HD650 just sounds lovely.

If you extend your buget there isn't any headphones that are actually better but just a different flavours. It all comes down to preference anyway.
