Seeing as I'm here I may as well ask about something more interesting..

So I've got my big boring diesel estate which is the tool I need to do a job. It's not at all fun however and I'm starting to want something to have a laugh in. I turned 30 the other day and grew up in Glasgow so call it a midlife crisis. I did think about combining my need for a big practical estate with something more fun to drive into something like a 530d but that doesn't seem like the best plan.

So for about 6k what should I get? Want something open top, preferably RWD. I just want something that I can take out for a blast when the need takes me. At this stage most running costs aren't an issue (within reason!), insurance won't be that expensive and I don't mind a high tax bracket. The only boring stipulations are that it has to live outside so if it leaks or rusts to pieces then it's no good. I wouldn't mind something that won't depreciate much, don't want to spend 6 grand now for it to be worth nothing in a year.

The S2000 fits the bill and I love how it looks and drives. Could also do a newer mx5, older boxster, older m3 or possibly something waftier and more v8 like an xk8 or some sort of merc.

So help me out, what's the biggest smile I can have for the money?

S2000 would fit the bill perfectly. £6k should easily get you into one. I don't think you'd get many more smiles for the money.

Hmm z4s have come down a lot recently, didn't think decent ones with proper engines would be in budget... Apparently so. Are they more fun than the honda though?

Well the claw marks in my passenger side door and seat seem to suggest i'm having a lot of fun in mine :D

MR2 Turbo, mk2, t-bar. Good luck finding a decent one mind you.

Could be fun, or possibly lethal! I don't know the mk2 well but fairly familiar with the mk1. The fact that I've not seen one of those in God knows how long because they've all turned into a pile of rust would make me worry about leaving a mk2 out in the rain

Another vote for the MR2 turbo but make sure you get a Revision 3+ mainly for the much stronger engine! Finding a non abused one is hard though.

S2000 is the easy option at that budget.

S2000 or Z4 first thoughts for a drop top around that price, 350z possibly but not a fan of them in roadster form. Audi TT maybe? Get over the hairdresser comments and they are still a good car, 3.2 with DSG would be nice soundtrack with the roof down.

I owned an S2000 and loved it, looking to maybe get a convertible again this year and would probably try something different though (I'd like a Z4M :) ).

Yeah not overly keen on the 350z to be honest.

Lots of love for the s2000 it seems. As much as I like the old MR2, why do I want one of those over the honda? Newer, better looks, proper convertible...

Nobody think the boxster is worth a look? Or would they just be a total liability at this money?

As much as I love the Mr2, for the relatively small additional outlay required to get you an S2000 vs a clean, non abused, non rusty rev3+ turbo it just can't compete with the Honda which feels a much more modern (because it is) car, will be more reliable (not tinkering every other weekend), plus has no roof (yeah ok T bar, but it's not the same).
