I really, really appreciate what you are doing but my love for the quiet, cool GTX 970 is too much to give up. when the r9 290 is humming away at 100db, I'll always be thinking about the GTX 970.......

I really want a way to make the 970 work with a new CPU.

Yes, my PSU isn't amazing, but it can run the 970 due to it's low wattage, and an i5 is less power hungry than my current 4170.

Also, the CPUs you mention are going to bottleneck the 970. I mean I could stretch to £460 to incorporate the 970 in with a CPU and MOBO but I don't know how/which one.

So this would be your best option I think, I know the CPU will bottleneck but you can upgrade the CPU later as you've got a board with a 1150 socket, OC the CPU will give it a better chance.

Sorry, I got carried away with doing some benchmarks, let me have a look.

Quick look it should be fine. You may have to adapt your HDD cage slightly but the card is only 260mm long and the case is overall 480mm so you shouldn't have a problem
 
In all fairness, the 970 is overkill for your needs and is the biggest factor in eating up your budget, the 290 isn't a rocket powered noise maker, they're suitable for your needs.

The fan profile can be modified to make them even quieter, the 970 although being that little bit more energy efficient & quieter, doesn't really justify the price difference?

Again, your power supply isn't going to cut the mustard. I would be scared using it with a high end card.

PCS+ at £200 then a decent power supply. I love my 290x albeit, a bit on the large side!

Yeah your right, I meant to click on 1600Mhz as it is the maximum the H81 will benefit from.
