About 3 weeks ago I took ownership of a 2008 Z4 coupe 3.0si

All was great until I reviewed the service book in more detail today and noticed large gaps (time) between services. I was only given the book after the sale but I wasn't really concerned at first as I was told the car is condition based serviced. Not worrying about the history was the whole reason I bought BMW AUC

Anyway I just sent them an email and then called BMW UK who confirmed the car should have been serviced every 2 years and ~15k.

I can't see a good ending two this aside from they have two services missing but documented on their systems, after that I presume I need to chase for a refund since it's going to going to give me no end of grief when selling it right?

Good Morning [Dealer MD]

I got this email address from your website on the "I have a question" section, I hope I've been directed to the right place.
I have a question regarding a recently purchased BMW AUC bought by myself from [Dealer Location] 26th Jan 2015. - Reg xx08 xxx - Z4 Coupe

My question relates to the servicing schedule and the AUC status:

According to the Service Booklet (which I was presented with after the sale) the car has the following service history:

22/01/2007 - Pre-delivery
03/02/2009 - Oil Service - 11,608 Miles
10/10/2011 - Brake Fluid - 16,344 Miles
18/10/2011 - Inspection I - 16,348 Miles
29/05/2014 - Inspection II - 32,245 Miles

Then 26/01/2015 - Purchased AUC from [Dealer] 35,100 Miles (not serviced)

I called up [Dealer] (which will be my local dealer) to query about water in the front fog light which I'd questioned before purchase and was "fixed" but has since returned. That's fine I understand the dealer will have left on the lights to clear the water in the first instance. I've now booked it in to be looked at as it's clearly not fixed.

While on the phone to your service centre I asked about the service intervals to see when it will next be due because it will likely be a long long time before I reach the current "due" which is 12,500 miles.
I was told the services are due to 2 years or as required.

This leads me to a worrying question, have I been sold a BMW AUC by [Dealer] that doesn't have a full service history? The gap between Oil Service is Inspection 1 is 2 years 8 months and the time between Inspection 1 and 2 is 2 years 7 months

I can be contacted by email or phone.

Kind Regards

If I recall the only time dictation is the brake fluid.

Isn't there just an advisory to change the oil every 2 years?

So you should have had an inspection 2 on 18/10/2013, around that time if you wanted perfect history.

In the grand scheme of things I think it's ok.

Proof read your email.

The only thing I'd be concerned with is the first server being 11,000 miles, I'd have expected one a lot sooner than that after break in. That may be normal nowadays though.

So you're saying 2 years 8 months is an acceptable BMW service interval?

Note my email should have read I was told by BMW (dealer) and BMW UK it is not recommended to go over 2 years.

This is my understanding too. The inspection based services have no time element to them, only distance. It advises you change the oil after 2 years if covering ultra low miles but nothing beyond that and it doesn't say 'bring the scheduled service forward'.

To me the only thing wrong with that history is that it had an Inspection 2 when only an oil service was due.

FYI all, the dealer has advised me that they've checked and BMW warranty have refused the car after getting clarification on the time gaps.

They have recently brought in a 2y 6m limit apparently.

I believe the dealer didn't know that and so far have been helpful and offered me a couple of options.

I'm not going to take the risk of having trouble selling the car so I'm now looking for another as replacement.

Trouble is there aren't many around. I've considered putting some extra cash in and going for a 3.0 model from the new version but I'm not sure I can live with a folding roof.

I'm going to have a think about it.

So they are retrospectively changing the service requirements many years after production

No idea, but to say there is no time limit must have been silly, you can't garage a car for 2 years then go on to do 12k over the next two years and call it a full service history, maybe BMW do.

But BMW warranty have certainly put in place a limit of 2.5 years between services.

So I bought a car with the BMW warranty and have now found it won't be covered hence I've been miss-sold.

That's very interesting, good thing to keep in mind if you're buying a second hand BMW and are planning to get a warranty.
