So I've had American Express "My Essentials" cover for a year or so now and never used it. I do, however, value the peace of mind that it gives me.

That said, whilst I don't mind adding each item one-by-one onto the policy, I hate the way I have to phone them up, request a form (by snail mail), fill it in with device details and post it to them. These days that process just seems so antiquated - I find it maddening that they don't have a website to manage my registered devices.

I don't have contents/home insurance so that is out.

Does anyone else use this type of insurance? and can anyone recommend a similar level of cover that I can manage online? I trust the "American Express" brand (so I would expect them to provide me with good cover should I have to claim) unlike the "protect your bubble" stories I've heard. I pay £12 a month and it covers pretty much all my personal items as well as my girlfriends (we live together) - watch, phones, headphones and laptops.

Just google "protect my bubble reviews" - that will answer all you need.

My bank account has travel, gadget cover etc - used it twice for a cracked screen and a lost phone. Excess was £25 each time but quick service. Think it's £50 for iphones excess.

Cost me £12 a month but well worth it for gadget cover, world wide travel insurance for the whole family, AA cover etc etc

Who's this with if you don't mind me asking? I have HSBC Premier but I believe it only has worldwide travel insurance :(

A lot of the cheaper contents insurance policies need gadget insurance adding on, so they won't cover mobiles or expensive laptops without additional charges which can make it cheaper to get it from a specialist gadget policy.
I use NatWest for my basic contents insurance but then Endsleigh to cover my laptop.

A friend of mine tried claiming with protect your bubble. apparently he didnt report it in time so it was void.

I use my bank (nationwide) and never had problems claiming with them

I'm with endsleigh for my contents insurance, 2 reasons:

- only place that would cover JUST my belongings in a shared house
- default of £4k cover for computing equipment

costing me around £120/year with my bike (custom BMX, ~£700) as an addition

Paid bank accounts generally work out best. Good cover, good service and the best accounts on the market throw in rather a lot for the asking price. Nationwide's FlexPlus account offers UK & European breakdown cover, Worldwide mobile phone cover for all family members living at your address, Worldwide family travel insurance, 12 months extended warranty on electrical goods and fee-free cash withdrawals when abroad. The account is £10/month. The interest rate isn't bad either - 3%. Bargain TBH. Planning on signing up for it myself once my student overdraft is gone.

Not sure I'd necessarily pay for 'gadget' insurance, it is a waste of money for a lot of people. If you're getting it packaged with some other deal then maybe.
