It really does take some effort to find a decent trade run now. I am not complaining at all but I could see a few people getting put off by the long haul needed if you want a decent upgraded ship.

I do miss my luxuries runs though :(

The thing I dislike most is I can't just pick up and play for trading, if I go afk for a week (or only time to play weekends) I end up having a great trade route turn to poop meaning it takes time to find one that is worth the effort and I just can't be bothered and log off :(

I mean great, living "market" and all that but there's literally nothing else for traders. It needs variety and not in the text sense.

Gold has been good for me for weeks just buy around 9200 then sell for 9900 guaranteed 700 profit per tonne soon adds up if you have a lot of cargo space......

There are better around. I have a one jump 13Ly run with 1500 profit on gold one way (buy for 8825), and 500 on slaves the other. The gold seems to be in endless supply too (600k in stock) and never seems to go down, or the price increase.

I could be lucky that T9 can not farm it due to the it being just outside their range and the only other route there is 6-7 jumps or so.

Just search around for better prices and high availability

I have a decent run that is only 13.7Ly and nets me 1500 per ton on palladium one way and 500 per ton on performance enhancers back, so 2K per ton round trip.

The last route I did, after the 1.1 patch was 1600 one way, 1400 the other, one jump.
After an evening it would be down to 1200 / 1000.

Next evening, 1350 / 1200
After an evening, 1100 / 900

But have not been back since.
I expect it'll now not be great :/

yeah you need to find a high supply low traffic station to keep the prices static My costs are the same as they were 5 days ago when I found it.

Well they need to do something, for casual players a great deal of the current content is out of the reach due to the rather stupid high prices of ships and upgrades.

Well to be fair you don't need a lot of cash to do exploring, bounty hunting, most missions or rare trading etc.. but its indeed not very suitable for casual play. I dread to think how much time I spent on this just in the last few weeks. Sitting at 100m+ total assets right now but very tired of the grind and time to go enjoy myself in a Viper or something :P

What sort of distance/types of economy should I be looking for to set up a decent trade route?

I had a look last night at a few systems within 1 jump of each other and I struggled to find any that would even buy and sell anything to each other, let alone at a profit!

I'm assuming they needs to be 3 or 4 jumps apart to get anything decent? (still in the starter Sidewinder btw)

I did the same Ezah, got my Python to a nice level with a mix of A and C stuff (B grade is not worth it imo)

So bought a cobra and to my dismay i cant get on with it. The gimbled cannons on the outside just dont work :(

In a Sidey, I would be shooting wanted NPC in Resource Extraction Areas (Scan with a Kill Warrant Scanner first for extra bounty!) until I could afford a Cobra with 50T cargo and then go and do rares, normal trading doesnt pay off with such a low cargo bay. When you ready to go into an Asp or Type 7 then use Thrudds to find some bulk trades.. http://elitetradingtool.co.uk/

A Viper was always my go-to ship for combat fun really, although not sure how they are now since the Shield Cell changes in the last update. Ill be back in one soon enough to try it though.. looking forward to try the Fer de lance though, and maybe it will replace my Python.

Great in theory but I've found myself to be hugely incompetent when it comes to combat so I was looking to go strictly trading until I was more confident in that arena!

I've done a few missions and only got around 20k in credits so wanted to get myself upgraded to a Hauler before I do much else!

I found the most enjoyable way to a Cobra was jobbing in a Sidewinder. Odd mission here, trade run there with some interdictions and pirate hunting thrown in for good measure.

Helps get you used to all the fundamentals in the game, too, and improve your flying / combat skills.

I agree, after 30 years my Elite flying skills were rusty to say the least.. I was very happy to farm bounties until could get into the Cobra, and if it all goes wrong. its another free ship thanks.

Yer, I did the same. Plenty of bulletin board missions and they don't need to be a kill mission either. Black box searching (make sure it is an outpost with a black market) and you can soon start getting some credits.

Looks like I might need to grow a pair and start doing some bounties to get my credits up by the looks of things then! :D

I have to admit, trading looks an ominous prospect with a ship that only holds 4 tons of cargo and has such a limited jump range - I'll barely cover the fuel cost on some of the runs! (I know I'll need to get more efficient when I have a better ship too!)

Couple of quick questions on combat then - I assume if you are destroyed, you get the basic ship back but not any cargo on board? (assume you don't lose your credits??)
Also, is the basic Sidewinder competent enough for combat? (and winning!) How would I go about checking if I'm badly outmatched before engaging?

You have insurance on your ship so if you have upgraded your sidewinder you can buy the ship (for free) plus any of your upgrades at a massive discount. This is the same for any ship you own apart from the actual ship itself will also cost you some money for all the non sidewinders. The total rebuy cost of your current stuff is on the right hand console panel when you're in your ship.

For starting out only pick on other sidewinders and eagles until you get better. I'm sure there are hot shots out there that can fight anything in a sidey and win but for us mere mortals we pick and choose our targets wisely.
