Hi Guys,

Whats regarded as the best router right now?

  • Budget is up to £280
  • Will be used with a Virgin Superhub 2.0 on 152MB service
  • Will be linked to a XBMC media PC, 2x NAS, Laptop and then various wireless devices such as ipads and iphones
  • 3 bedroom semi with thick walls
  • 5 ports so I still have 4 left after connecting superhub

I may as well get a decent one whilst I have some cash spare, I hear the Asus ones are good, but which exactly?

It's really going to depend on whether you want Wireless-AC support.

The N66U is fine, but it is now quite an old model.

Ordered the N66U now. I did look at the AC version, it was only £10 more. However I based my decision on reviews n more solid firmware for the N66 given its age and user base, plus I didn't even know what AC was until I read up.

Happy with my choice:)

Given most people don't have lots of AC devices yet, the N66U is a pretty decent router.

The main advantage of going with the RT-AC68U is that ASUS have brought out their new adaptive QoS and other tools that were being made available on newer routers to the AC68U now.

Once you get it, take a look over at http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=22627 and install the Merlin firmware - good improvements over the stock ASUS firmware.

Managed to cancel before shipping. It's either the AC66 or N66, or alternative make. Decided to drop my budget to ~£115. The AC68 is £150.

So, is the Ac66 a better buy than the N66? Does it still support legacy wireless (g/n) as well as this new fangled AC?

For a £10 difference you'd have to be mad to buy an N66U over an AC66U.

Unless you need the power for more advanced features such as very fast VPN performance, the AC66U will be more than sufficient.

It's true that the N66U is quite old now, however the hardware in most of these routers is the same. The AC66U and N66U have the same or very similar CPUs for example.

However, you say you have thick walls...I'd definitely consider spending a little bit of your remaining budget on powerline adaptors with built-in Wi-Fi if you're getting poor signal strength.
