Ok having an issue with my employer.

Last Friday I fractured two toes and 2 hairline fractures in my foot. I went to hospital ect they said wanted top put a cast on and I refused as I have been in a cast and know how uncomfortable they are but I have also recovered from fractures without casts before. I worked all weekend and Monday but the pain became unbearable and at the end of my shift monday I told employer that I would be getting a sick note for me next shifts Thursday and Friday as I feel i need to rest. I know fractures take a lot longer to heal than this and i should rest it longer but I also start over two weeks holiday now.

So my calculation are just over two weeks rest and I should be able to work again and not need to take more than two days work.

Hope yer following this.

I popped to the doctors wednesday morning and explained that I need a sick note for the Thursday and Friday they informed me that because I am only asking for two days sick to be accounted for that they could not do this as sick notes generally are for over 7 days and that i would have to take my employer a self assessed sick note (I think that was the name of the form) I filled this in a took it to my workplace and handed it to the manager that was on at the time.

They said this was no good and that my shifts are covered for Thursday and Friday anyways and that they would be just put down as sick days.

Roll on this morning and the main manager of the store department phones me and has now demanded a sick note from my doctors. If i was to get a note or a letter it would cost me money and I even said I don't care about being paid for the last two days. So I am now having to take cash out my own pocket just to please them and I feel this is unfair am I right in feeling this way?

yes they are being unreasonable and aren't following set guidelines.

All you need to do is provide a self cert, however, give them permission to contact the doctors about the matter if they wish to confirm it. just before a 2 week holiday they are going to get suspicious though.

To be honest, he could get a longer certificate from the Dr and he could use that instead of holiday, get sick pay, and take the holiday leave at another point.

my contract is up 10th of march one of the reasons I am leaving is because They are forcing me to take holidays when I don't want to because it suits them. But I dont wana leave on bad terms as badly need a refrence

Good idea... get a sick note for 2 weeks from the doctor. Use that and reduce your holiday. Then get paid for your holiday when you leave.

Most doctors wont give a sick note until your almost up one the self sign sicknote. That as its been said lasts 7 days. After that a Doctors sick note will be done on a weekly basis and your employer 'may' require a "fit" note on your return.

Never heard of a doctor charging for a piece of paper before though.

Lots do this as writing letters and notes is not classed as part of the NHS

Get a cast put on, get a doctors note for two weeks and cancel your holiday. All perfectly legal and within your rights, sounds like your manager is a ****, and considering your contract is finished shortly who gives a **** what they think?

Employers are allowed to dictate when you take your vacation.

How did you break your toes?

Self cert as you went back to work. Hand your dept. manager a staff handbook with the relevant sections highlighted.
Take the holiday as it's paid as it's better than getting SSP especially if you are leaving soon.
