Had a phone call from someone trying to offer me a monthly scheme where for a fee they would do everything from groupon to currys etc and buy the stock at trade prices so saving me hundreds of pounds potentially.

Sounds good and the first month was a free trial. They wanted a sort code to determine if I had a valid bank account. I gave them that as everyone in the local area who is with that bank will have the same sort code. it was a free trial. They had my name and address already from somewhere.

Then they asked for my account number. At this point I refused and essentially hung up.

Is this a new scam and did I do the right thing?

The right thing to do would have been to hang up as soon as they mentioned wanting your sort code, where did you think the conversation was going to go from there on?!

sort code is just the banks area code.

the sort code on one of my cards is for the banks HQ and not even my local branch so I wouldn't worry about that.

It's obviously some kind of scam.

probably something along the lines of what happened with clarkson when he said no one can do anything with your bank number and sort code then someone signed him up to a charity via direct debit

Essentially they kept me on the line as knew my number, address and full name so was wondering where they would get that from..... seems to be happening more and more nowadays.

I have some magic beans for sale. They bring you luck wealth and more women than you can shake a stick at. ;)

There are people in this world who are sweet and honest ...... naive even and you sound like you fit in there somewhere.... right in the middle. If anyone approaches you with an offer and then wants your bank details then it's PROBABLY a scam. By PROBABLY I mean DEFINATELY in this case, whatever this 'offer' is you really should be deafened by alarm bell ringing in your ears for the next few days - don't worry the deafness will go away as soon as you say 'NO THANKYOU' and put the phone down.

To sum up - you DID THE RIGHT THING

Thanks - I guess I'm just more trusting than most as I have forced myself to trust and take chances. Sounds like too much....

They knew my address, name and now they know my sort code which is a local one to the bank anyway for the town so not that much of an issue I was thinking.

Nah knowing the sort code isn't an issue. You can pull that up on the internet so its not an issue.

They'll have your address from somewhere you've signed up to. They've probably given your details to a "trusted third party" who've then sold the details on.

You didn't give your account number to someone in recent memory did you?
