Hi...question in the title. Building a second machine for son.

Thinking about a 2nd hand i5-2500k and 2nd hand 1155 motherboard from an auction site...should be able to snag these for a total of £150.

However would prefer to buy new from OcUK...is there an AMD alternative that will be similar in performance to a moderately OC'd 2500K? Haven't bought a CPU for some while so lost track of where its at.

Will be mostly used for gaming...and paired with an AMD R9 290

Cheers

Second hand for that budget would be best imo, it is either a i5 2500k and motherboard or AMD FX 6xxx and motherboard. The i5 will be better than a FX 6xxx for gaming.

You're probably better off going for a second hand i5 4670K/i5 4690K and board rather than i5 2500K and board for 150.

No way I'd want to compromise on the CPU with a 290 at the helm.

The amount saved though is worth going for the 2500k, BF4 is fine on my i5 3570k and the 2500k would overclock more than what I have.

He's looking at spending 150 for a second hand 2500K and board, you can easily do the same with a 4670K and a board.

I would agree with this tbh, if for £150 you can get a 4670k + Z87/Z97 board then go for it, it's a brilliant setup for the price

I would be tempted myself if I could get a 4670k and z87/z97 for £150. Unfortunately, I think you're looking at around £150 just for a 2nd hand 4670k.

Yep...4670k's appear to be going for circa £140-150 second hand.

2500k's look to be going for circa £100....think I will snag one of these and a cheap 2nd hand mobo for circa £30.

they will all play on a 2500K, i played BF4 and hardline(beta) on a 2500k and gtx770 just fine.

i would say downsize the GPU a little to something like a 280x and spend a little more on the motherboard so you can get a good over clock or in the not too distant future you will struggle in games, my 2500k was at 4.4 to 4.6 and i found it to be the same as my 4670(stock speeds) so you really need to be over clocking the 2500k or go for a newer cpu

@ 1080 you dont need more than a 280x. i went from a gtx770 to 290 to 7970 and found them all to play the games i play the same. now got an 290x and the only real difference is my case is hotter. the 290x dosent really do any work until your @ 1440 or over.

2500k kills 6300 so dont get that. That was my upgrade 6300 to 2500k and it was a big step so lets not go backwords.

Why not give the kids your board and cpu than get your self an upgrade

The Op stated that he's prefer to buy new. That's the best he can do for £150.

then the i3-4160 would be better. as there is a future for the socket to upgrade.

how ever for the most power you can get with new parts then yes a 6300 would be about it

Thanks for all the advice...I've decided to go for a 2nd hand 2500k and a cheap mobo...hopefully snag both for circa £130.

Cheers
