I also think that if you sign up for a warzone, you should get given a ship - PVP is a waste of time because people either log or run away, as losing your big precious ship is just too risky - why not have war zones where you can just get stuck in, die and respawn - maybe it just costs a small fee each time, rather than lose your entire ship... at least it'd be good for PVP

or take a Viper to warzones as it will probably cost less to buy than the repairs on a conda/python.. I think the running costs on a large ship should be somewhat prohibitive. I know that most of the time I will leave a fight with my python at 100%, but it can easily go very wrong if I am too late with the Shield Cell, or I get rammed at the wrong moment. That does keep you on your toes and avoids a God mode mentality.

You'd get people ramming left, right and centre if the ships were totally disposable.

If you want a ship specifically for war zones, you could buy one and kit it out. Managing risk is an important part of the game.

Kit out an Eagle and only pick on the smaller targets, weakened large ones in the warzones. If you want an all round fighter capable of taking on Pythons and Asps get a Viper and kit it out.

Much better and cheaper than taking a large ship into these areas.

As for reputation and rankings....Anyone got any basic help for me? I keep doing loads of missions but not sure if any of them have better rep improvements over another? Should I be avoiding certain one's? Should I be doing certain station missions over another station?

"Goodwill" missions for faction rep are rewarded more heavily (for that rep) than one giving a financial reward, however if there is a weighting system whereby some missions give more rep than others I certainly haven't been able to find it out.

With regards to avoiding certain missions I would suggest that if faction rep is rewarded equally across the various missions available then the ones to avoid will be the ones where you are likely to fail / get destroyed etc. Illegal missions are best avoided unless you are confident in docking fast enough to avoid a scan.

Doing missions over another station? Provided the mission is rewarding you for the faction you want then there isn't much point unless you are friendly or allied to the minor faction already. If you are looking to improve overall faction (Empire, Federation or Alliance) rep then apparently it works faster if you gain rep across many of the smaller allied factions rather than a lot of rep with just one of two of the allied factions. I'm working on Alliance rep so once I hit friendly with a minor faction I move to working on either a different minor faction or move to another station and start work there.

I have ranked up to allied/Baron mainly on good will (bring food/med/weapon) missions, and they are the easiest to do although wont make any cash to speak of. I do think the charity missions decrease the factions standing on the system though, but they are enough to get you friendly and allied with them.
A lot of people have reporting a lack of progression missions which switching to another system did solve.
Right now I am only doing assassinate and pirate missions until i get the next progression one, and I am taking them from all the Empire aligned sub-factions within my system, with whom I am all now allied with. The Jet Cartel hate me though :D

Tbh, I've spent god knows how long interdicting people in a sidewinder/eagle, fighting in combat zones and extraction points since the Alpha/Beta, so it's not like I'm any stranger to it.

I just want more stuff to do, the wings update seems "promising" but aside from more/bigger targets at USS points, I don't really see much else being added.

Planetary landings are slated for an upcoming paid expansion as far as I know.

Cheers. Does the Frontier site have a direct link for upcoming content?

Get on those Rares, you'll be making big money in no time. :)

I haven't got the money for them at the moment (rares are in yellow?). Also just a quick one: When I'm at a station and looking through the commodities section, why can I only buy certain things and not others?

Under the columns, does it have to be listed under both supply and demand to be able to buy it?

Also with regards my next ship. Is is more beneficial to go with a hauler instead of an Eagle? I'm assuming the Eagle is more for combat..

Cheers

I know what you mean.

The game is basically a remake of Frontier, but with less content; Frontier had much more ships, passenger transport missions (add taxi driver to the list of occupations!), photo-reconnaissance missions, nuclear strike missions, planetary landings... all squeezed onto a 1.44 MB floppy disk!

I loved Frontier and I love Elite: Dangerous but the lack of an end-game does concern me. I already have two friends who have stopped playing and who say that they'll be back "in a year when there's more content"; will they return, and if do will there be enough added content to keep them interested? I'm not sure, and that's concerning.

Indeed....got very bored very quickly with Elite.....the foundation of the game is great.....good engine.....good flight mechanics.....just litterally NO content that isnt a rinse and repeate of itself int he same looking stations in empty lifeless space.

In a year or so's time they may have started to bring out more content, but by that time Star Citizen PU Alpha/Beta and SQ42 will be out and Elite will be long forgotten in my mind.

Well done. I can only dream of making 55-80k on trade runs... Most I'm making atm is about 4-5k :D

Got enough for a hauler now but I'm reticent about buying it as I'll be skint but I guess I've got to speculate to accumulate.

Regarding content and the game in general, does anyone know if planet landing has been mooted to ever becoming a feature? I seem to remember you could do that and there was lots more to do in Frontier, and Elite for that matter. I must admit, I'm enjoying it so far and like the loneliness of traipsing from system to system. Just wish there were more missions and more variation.

Was pretty much the same for me. But I managed to find a nice little triangle last night - auto fabricators to first system, then personal weapons to second, then bertrandite (or whatever it called) to third, then auto fabricators back to first.

Was getting 7k to 10K on each part, and that just in a viper. If it's still profitable tonight, I might swap some stuff for more cargo holds.

Peasant money compared to a lot, but most have been able to manage so far.

To be honest, am about ready to give up on missions. There isn't enough of them, they usually offer a pittance, they are annoyingly timed, and often far too time consuming for the credits on offer. Mission system more than just a little bit rubbish in my opinion.

From now on, am sticking to trading or bounty hunting. Maybe the occasional mission if it's offering enough credits and looks to be easy enough.

That's the problem I'm having. There's just not enough missions at the stations. All the missions tend to be for rep, ones where you supply goods (aint got the money) or simply way over my capabilities.

It's bloody annoying and make progress unbelievably slow going.

Which brings me on to this...

This should be a worry for Frontier and Braben. They've got the game out first and the mechanics of it are superb - there's no disputing that. The lack of content however could kill it dead over the next few months. It's fine players saying they're bored and will return in a year when there's more content. But will they?

With SC on the horizon and now with the added advantage of seeing the competition and it's glaring flaws, they will be able to work demonically on their game to ensure that they don't make the same mistake at full launch. As you say, if they deliver on their promises and gamers make the jump and settle into because there's tons to do, then the chances are they are not going to come back to Elite no matter what improvements are made.

@Apsilon - Indeed mate......Star Citizen is promising so much, with such a high level of detail and content from the start, that if they manage to deliver people who have stopped playing Elite wont return as SC will be such a good experience, that there would be no reason to return.

Elite have their work cut out over the next year, as SC will crush it with the crazy content that is being promised.

I think SC could end up on the opposite scale of the spectrum to Elite - plenty of content, but all of it eye/tech candy without any real feel to it.

I hope i'm wrong, but I think SC is far from a done deal imo.

Indeed.....far from a done deal!

You will find out very soon with the FPS and Social Module coming out shortly and also the first few episodes of Squadron 42 released this year.

I have been slogging away doing federation missions and was getting close to saying **** it and just doing what I wanted but persevered and I am now ranked Lt Commander, with only one more rank to go.

I do feel the ranking system is very harsh and when I look at my rep with the Federation, I am very high in all of the one's I have visited. That is not a complaint but I do wish they would make ranking up with factions a little easier and maybe more direct Naval ranks with obvious "Do this type of mission to naval progress" or something similar. There doesn't seem to be a defining factor for progression and even though I am allied with the entire Federation, that still isn't enough for simple ranking progression.

I am getting the feeling they will need to introduce some form of quicker travel at some point.

While is great that the galaxy is so big, it is also beyond tedium to get anywhere. Maybe you could buy a place on a super jump ship to get from point A to B, instead of 15-20ly jumps and re-fuel time.

I think the game is great but the travel time is becoming a time sink that spoils the game imo.

Its also a pain having to buy and sell a sidewinder when you want to swap home areas with your trader and cheaper cobra for blasting.

We need Guild Highliners (Dune) or Ian M Banks galactic starships that make a Super Star Destroyer look like a Sidewinder....

Received my EDTracker Saturday, so much better for me than IR tracking :)

Anyone got any recommendations for Cosi? Currently have a standard Hauler.

Maybe like a hand full of 'Jumpgates' dotted around the galaxy?

A taxi service was diacussed a while back for getting to your stored ships, but I believe it was mooted because of lore (real time, no teleportation) and possible exploits (store lots of Sideys to create your own fast travel network). Personally I agree that we need some system in place as it would make co-op play with friends so much easier, but I'm sure our designers will come up with something :).
