Network Gurus, I need you! Can you install a DVD over a home network?

Hi all,

I need to install a DVD to my wife's laptop but for some reason it's not working on her DVD-RW drive, and it only just about installs on my laptop, I've tried multiples of the same DVD and its the same thing, and she has no issues with other DVDs so I'm assuming its just this one that is the problem?

Can I use the DVD in my laptop and install over WiFi or RJ45? If so, how please?

Set your DVD drive as a shared drive and then you will be able to select it on the other machine.

Must remember to set permissions on the share to show the access.

Done this myself a few times.

This is also what I do as the only machine in the house with optical is my server, don't remember the last time I used one of those DVD things...

Rip the disc to an ISO, mount the ISO on the laptop, either over the network or USB stick or whatever.

If it "only just about" installs on your laptop then there's a chance the disk is damaged - ripping it to an ISO will give you the best chance of getting a clean copy of the data off it.

This..

Use IMGBurn to rip it to and ISO file.

Then on your wife's machine, use VirtualCloneDrive to mount the ISO file as a virtual drive (it's a simple task)

Or you could just copy the folder onto a hard drive and run it from the folder (pretty much the same as the iso idea).

This works 99% of the time and is easier than installing virtual drives.
Only time ive not seen it work is games 10+ years old
