Q4 2014 - nvidia gain market share again

Again, based on what?
Nvidia have publicly said they are not trying to target phones and mass consumer tablets (though willing to work with if approached, e.g. nexus)”
NVidia used to target phones and mass consumer tablets but they gave up for various reasons. They changed they mind and now they target different areas like automotive.

“As apple use an imagination design gpu it shows you right there what the margin would be for nvidia trying to get their chips in to phones, not billions at all, its nonsense to use apple as an example of margin for a chip maker who doesnt manufacture and sell directly to end users.””
The margins for an IP company like Imagination and a company like NVidia are massively different. Imagination do not produce and sell chips so the margin tends to be around 10p to 30p depending on what GPU was used. NVidia on the other hand produce chips so have a margin in the £20 to £30 pound range. So given similar volumes NVidia would be in the $billion(s).

“Where are you getting it that tegra is running at a loss? Every article i can find talks about growth and profit in tegra.”
Please show some evidence because I have seen nothing but articles talking about a loss. To quote NVidia own Annual report for fiscal year 2014 “Tegra Processor Business. Tegra Processor business revenue decreased by 48%” Or to put it in money terms the drop was around $366 million year on year.

According to the numbers Tegra lost £268 million in the year ending Jan 2014. It’s not going be that bad for 2014 to 2015. Last time I looked the growth had meant the loss was only $53million.

See this... just doesn't make sense. To me.

How many people here do not choose their cards based on the tech and the performance, but instead because of emotive things like "the community" or "the image" or other suchlike?

It's like choosing the school to send your children based on what colour the carpets are.

And yes, I agree AMD's marketing is idiotic most of the time. But why should tech people give two craps about it? Does being on the right "team" make you feel better about yourselves?

Hey, I buy whatever I like in tech terms and I change my mind more than I change my pants but seeing how some (not all) AMD owners seem to actually dislike nVidia owners, that just puts me off owning them. I like my sense of humour and would hate to lose that :D

How can nvidia make £20-30 per chip, when phone makers like apple are already only paying $19 per chip?
Apple have some of the biggest margins on phones and pay $19 per chip, other phone makers compete with apple by selling for less yet magically have room for a $50 chip?

You're imagining it.

The number of people who care what other people buy is minute.

No one here is losing any sleep that you went with the green team. No one here is disliking you purely because of that fact.

A small number of people may choose to dislike you because of the way you present yourself.

Most people, myself including, do not give two craps about you ;) I don't mean that in a nasty way.

Have you not seen the amount of personal insults I get? Funnily enough, all from AMD owners... I have my computer as a hobby and I really enjoy it. Anyways, this has been done to death, so I will continue to buy what I like at the time of buying :)

Very good point.

So... does every nV owner here get treated like that? Or just you and one or two others...
I own cards from both and get basically no abuse from either side - except very occasionally in a 'spec me' thread where whichever card vendor I don't pick results in me getting called names (not every time, just been a handful of threads).

There are a couple of users who I find very annoying and ignorant. They exist on both sides and indeed sometimes switch camps and frequent more than just this sub-forum.
They're hardly a reason to buy one card over another though! Seems crazy to me.

Very well said :)

There are only a few people I slightly dislike and you certainly are not one of them. Though you do seem to constantly go out of your way to make nvidia look good and amd look bad. So in my book you are just a fan boy is all.

I have owned 5 Nvidia cards and 6 AMD/ATI cards over the years. My previous card was an Nvidia card. No one can call me a fan boy. If Nvidia provided better price for performance I would be buying more of their products.

I have a similar thing like you though gregster, when I see so many nvidia fan boys (not saying you in particular) go out their way to make nvidia look like it is much better and make amd sound like their cards are complete crap, it puts me a bit off nvidia (just a bit). Lets also not forget what nvidia recently did to their loyal customers with the 970 and it's false advertising.

As long as amd bring price for performance, I could not careless. I only do single cards and do not see any difference in drivers or quality of cards. Besides, something about supporting the underdog and trying to bring balance to the market to encourage combativeness :D

The others compete with apple by paying more per chip which is why Apple has the most profits. Apple design and produce their own chips so they don’t they don’t need to buy other peoples chips at a mark-up. Most phone makers cannot produce their own chips so they buy them off Qualcomm, MediaTek or NVidia.

Nivida only need to capture as little as 5% of the market to bring in revenue at over $1 billion. Qualcomm for example have a revenue of 24 billion.

Basically a company can develop its own SoC at super high costs then produce the chip dirt cheap like Apple do. Or you skip the super high and risky development costs and buy the chips more expensively off one of the company’s like Qualcomm, MediaTek or NVidia.

It comes down to a choice do you spent a ton of money on R&D and hope to get good chips at the end. Or do you skip R&D but pay more per SoC. Doing your own R&D means you need your own lab and own engineers.

Qualcomm and mediatek arent selling most chips at $50 a pop either, hence why nvidia are not bothering. Nvidia want to be selling at premium prices, not cutting margins thin to compete with qualcomm and mediatek

My original point was how I moan at nVidia and never get picked up by anyone, but I moan about AMD and state time and again that I want to see them do well (which I would be pretty stoopid if I wanted them to fold). It comes across as a few will not have a bad word said against their brand of choice. Now I don't care what is what when people buy and again, I want all my fellow gamers to enjoy the game with no problems....But the Raging nVidia fanboy in me wants me to be just 1fps ahead each time :D

(joke that last bit for those that missed it)

nVidia on a monopoly??? Not for me thanks but AMD do need to pick it up. They need to spend more on R&D, cut in the right places and do what they are more than capable of and release some decent GPUs. If they don't, that little graph in the OP will just get bigger in nVidia's favour.

Given AMDs presence in the APU space I feel it's healthier if nVidia remain a little ahead in the dGPU space - though they're getting excessively monopolyish now so it'd be good if AMD bring it back a bit soon.

Are the APUs doing well? It isn't something I have really followed or looked at in truth.

I suppose due to nvidia's prices I have not been in many nvidia threads of late, so I miss this :)

Oh and I just noticed, at the end of my last sentence I meant to say encourage competitiveness, but combativeness will do. lol

:)

No point continuing, as the saying goes the lights are on but nobody's home. I have yet to read a quality post that is transparent from the highlighted party.

I have three (old) laptops, a server, a pi (amongst other random gadgets), a surface pro 3 for work and the wife has a macbook. Intel and nvidia parts in there too! ;)

Going on topic, I am waiting for the next move after the news of a cash injection for AMD. Give them a year for this to feed in and see how they do.
