Nice one. I was the first to discover many different systems but none of them were earth like. I was around 1K ly from Sol though and I had enough of scanning :)

Thanks!

Think I've been bitten by the explorer bug, already planning my next trip out into the void; thought I would get bored out there, but it's so much more fun than endless trade runs!

Fair. I like to mix it up and do a bit of trading/missions/exploring/combat. I am quite chuffed I haven't got bored yet, as the game is quite linear in tasks but I am seriously loving it without being able to put my finger on why.

I'm the same, haven't played another game since I bought Elite at Christmas, despite buying a dozen or so in the Steam sale with the full intention of working my way through them!

Not sure what it is that I find so addictive about this game, but I keep coming back for more.

its pure escapism, it allows you to be who you want. good, bad or in my case, just the right amount of dirty :D

Escapism with enough to do is probs right. I am quite content chugging in and out of docks or FSDing all over the Universe or watching someone's shileds slowly disappearing :D

Decided tonight to change from my Sidewinder to the Hauler to try and get some better trading and missions - I upgraded the 4 bay cargo slots to 8 bay ones and went for a better FSD.

Anyway after a few pretty poor trade runs (like an idiot I'd not left enough in the pot to buy much decent cargo!) I finally managed to get a decent mission that netted me a profit of roughly 43k.

I'm now sitting on about 150,000cr and wondered what the best upgrades were for my hauler and whether I would be able to start doing any "rare" runs that I've heard about?

You can swap out your basic discovery scanner for a 2 slot cargo bay and that gives you 10 slots. You won't be able to scan any systems, so you would lose that bit of cash but I wouldn't spend too much on upgrades, as it would cost more to replace if you smash it up.

Try and work your way up for a Cobra, as this is a great ship with a possible 60 slots of cargo and very good in combat. It is one of the best ships out but at 300K+, it isn't that cheap.

Upgrade to D grade everything, they're cheap, light and better than the E grade junk that comes as standard. Make sure your reactor and thrusters are 2D and not 1D parts though. Oh and ditch the basic scanner for more cargo space like Greg said. You should end up with something like this:

Then yes, you *absolutely* should start doing rares runs! They're easily the most profitable way to trade in small ships, and they're a lot more fun (in my opinion) than the monotonous A to B repeat ad infinitum trading you're probably doing at the moment.

Legend posted a great rares run a few pages ago, this is essentially the same run I did to go from 2M in credits and a Cobra mk.3 to 30M in credits and an Imperial Clipper in a very short amount of time.

This in a nutshell is why I like it. I can just login, take off and fly somewhere. Despite it's flaws, the feeling of freedom to be able to do what ever you want and go wherever you want to go is fantastic.

I'm pretty much at the same point as you Stevie. I still haven't bought the hauler yet and was contemplating whether to go for the rare runs that Legend mentioned in my SW and just save for a Cobra. Speculate to accumulate versus carry on and save up. I won't be able to login till Friday though so it's a bit of a pain not getting on...

Does scanning Systems offer that much money? I've not sold any yet and realise that you have to be 20lys away to flog it but, I've noticed that the further afield I travel, the more my system data is worth. So is it worth hanging on to?

I was contemplating doing this in my SW but not sure if it's worth the outlay when I may as well just buy a Hauler (or do all ships come with E grade stuff as standard?). Further to this, what is the best way of keeping my engines cool? They are constantly overheating..!

I'm assuming that the lighter upgrades simply increases your speed/jump distance as there is less bulk or are there other benefits?

I thought the Hauler was the way to go - even sold my Sidewinder to fund some cargo (although I didn't get much - assume this is because the ship is free and essentially all I was "selling" was the upgraded FSD??

Scanning-wise I have sold a few bits of cartographic's - probably not the most cost-efficient as I sold it as soon as I could because I read somewhere that if you are destroyed that you lose anything that hasn't been sold? (is this right?)

Overheating-wise I've not come across this at all tbh!?!?! What are you using your ship for when this is happening?

Stevie, was in same boat. ditch the Hauler and go straight to the Adder. Chop in all your ships.

No Shields, sensors or weapons, just make sure you got enough for Insurance and take the risk. I think my adder is running with 23T of cargo space.

You will need 50CR for a good FSD drive and a fuel scoop. Once you got an Adder and good FSD, jump into Alliance or Empire space and stay there until you are a multi-millionaire.

Hmmm, I'm liking the look of this option tbh!

Not sure I am comfortable with having no shields (I got interdicted last night in my Hauler with 10 tons of Palladium in my hold and only just got away by the skin of my teeth as the attacker actually took down my shields while my supercruise was charging!)

I assume the ditching of the sensor, weapons and shields simply lessen the weight of the ship making longer jumps possible? Are there any other benefits?

*edit* ignore me - these take up internal compartments which could be utilised as cargo compartments instead!

If I do go down the Adder route then am I better stripping out my Hauler and selling the individual components or just chop it in all in one go? (I'm sure I read somewhere that it was better to strip it out first!?!?)

Seems weird if they are overheating without any reason. Can you describe the circumstances where this is happening?

It's when I jump into hyperdrive or do two jumps one after the other (not immediately though). The temps go through the roof with endless warnings and the bird going in to meltdown telling me she can't take any more..

If the engines are getting too hot (like when you jump into FSD), you need a bigger reactor.

Ah, that is probably it. I just didn't know what was the root cause or how to go about cooling them.

Thanks

I've had my ship temperature shoot up when I've flown too close to a sun but can't recall seeing an engine temp - where is it on the HUD?

Left hand side of the central display. It shoots up when the engines are engaging hyperdrive. When they get above 100%, the woman has a fit and screams at you..
