r9 290 LE or gtx 970?

Just chucking in I though LE = Lite Edition as well, as the Lightning "LE" is the lower clocked version of the standard lightning, and this one is lower clocked version of the standard 290X Gaming Edition

I vote the 290X LE (assuming it's not that much slower than a regular 290X), with the following caveat: your room is well ventilated. Summer is kicking off and the heat difference between a 290X/970 will be a lot more noticeable than the performance difference.

The 290X was always better than the GTX 970. It was only the hype about power consumption that made the 970 look better. Check out some of the newer game benchmarks and the 290X usually comes close to the 980 and normally faster than the 970 especially at higher detail and resolutions.

I had the 970 for a while but now have saved 200 quid and crossfired my old 7950. The crossfire setup is actually faster than an overclocked 970. GTA 5 ultra = 70-75fps ave@1080P. Only VRAM is the limiting factor here.

edit: damn didn't realise the OP date. I guess he bought a 970 right in the middle of the 3.5GB VRAM fiasco. It would be interesting to get a view of his experience though.

I have seen no evidence of a 3.5Gb vram limit on my 970. Im at 3.6Gb vram usage in GTAV and no issues.

That's because it's not really that much of an issue, some games may throw a fit when you pass 3.5 but it seems most don't, I'd be more concerned about the heat issues that many owners of the MSI Twin Frozer 290x gaming cards suffer from. I'm one of them and buying a non reference card just to see reference card temps is not good. Personally I think the OP had a close call and dodged a bullet by going with the 970.

I saw a video review from Gregster a while back on this card. Positive reaction on it. Same as a normal 290x as far as performance goes too :).
