2015 Chilli Growers Thread

I'm getting about a 50% overwinter success at the moment with my Aji's and Scotch Bonnets so i may replace 1 or 2 of each depending how they go.

I need to order some Bhut Jolokia and Carolina Reaper seeds asap and get going or I'm going to be way behind this season again

If anyone wants some Chocolate Habanreo's let me know - I have spare seeds.

I've had to pot 5 of my CAP253c's already as they have grown and have 2 leaves on them already

I wouldnt mind half a dozen seeds if possible. See if I can get a few plants going as my over wintered plants havent dont as well as expected.

Let me know and i'll trust you my address

My complete 2015 chilli log can be found at the chillis galore forums. My grow list this year consists of:

. Bhut Jolokia Rust (C. Chinense)
. Yaki Blue Fawn (? C. Chinense x C.Annuum Longum cross)
. Pink Tiger (?C.Chinense x C.Annuum cross)
. Goat's Weed (C. Annuum)
. Tepin Tikal National park of Guatemala aka "Guatemala Tepin" (C. Annuum var. Glabriusculum)
. C. Eximium CAP500
. C. Rhomboideum
. Aji Lemon drop (C. Baccatum)
. Aji (No other name indication, acquired from Edinburgh botanical gardens, either C. Baccatum, C. Annuum or C. Frutescens I expect)
. Rocoto Orange (C. Pubescens)
. Birmingham rag market Scotch Bonnet red (C. Chinense)
. Birmingham rag market Scotch Bonnet yellow (C. Chinense)
. Purple Flash (C. Annuum), *borrowed* from Birmingham Botanical gardens.
. C. Tovarii
. C. Lanceolatum

The annuums and most of the chinenses have gone straight in to propogators. The Eximiums, Rhomboideums, Tovariis, Lanceolatums and Rocotos have gone in to my floating raft as wilds tend to be more challenging when it comes to germination. I'm currently using two CFL bulbs in desk lamps as additional lighting, with a couple of small LED lights awaiting an E27 adapter in the post. I've also purchased a chilligrow and duogrow from greenhouse sensations, as well as a wooden grow cabinet for when these guys are a little bigger. Just a few pics, sorry if they crowd the forum a little:

A lonely C.Rhomboideum, these guys are HARD to germinate (he's the smaller furry seedling). If nobody has stumbled across this variety before it's not surprising. So the story goes it's been declassified and reclassified as Capsicum several times, because it's so unusual and unlike all other capsicum cultivars. Google image search will reveal why, and i'm excited like a small girl for this one \/

Not at all, this thread needs more activity. It used to be very popular when it was posted in GD, getting lots of new people interested in growing chillis (Thats how I first started as I would have never even known you could grow them in the UK). With it being hidden away in here there it's nowhere near as popular :(.

Looking very good there, makes me think I should have started a little earlier as I just have the first shoot coming through at the moment. What are the led bulbs you're getting? I have a cfl growlight, but its a bit big and uses 125w, so an led would be great for getting them started.

Well I got them from Amazon, but then the veterans on the chillis galore forum pointed out that the wording for the product was deceptive, and that the wattage would likely be split over all the LEDs, rather than signifying the wattage of each LED. I won't be recommending the product therefore ha. The CFLs I used were two from Homebase, running at 23W>100 Watt, 1450 Lumins. It's important to use CFL bulbs that are blasting out around the 6500 Kelvin range apparently, I initially bought some 2700 Kelvin bulbs (towards the red side of the spectrum) and was later told that they would be naff. 6500K is around the kelvin emissions of daylight sun, so they are optimal.

Don't worry about sowing dates, you're still ahead by average Joe standards. Most shop bought packets recommend March onwards to actually sow the seeds, but most of the hardcore chilli nerds began before xmas. Indoors, with the right heat and lighting, it's easily doable. My setup is comparably amateurish as i'm relying on the radiator for heat and some cheaper bulbs for additional lighting. On the Chillis galore forum, there are guys with proper technical Hydroponics systems.

^ That's a few dried C.Rhomboideums (seeds still inside the pods) sent to me by an enthusiast from Finland. I've noticed that Finland has already been discussed earlier in the thread, there are some top collectors and shops from the land of the Moomin, why they're particularly in to it I don't know, but then the British are particularly enthusiastic too. This is my first year growing wilds, i'm not sure why they appeal to me so much, but i'm fascinated with the evolutionary pathway that Capsicum has taken. Rhomboideum is thought to perhaps represent quite a seperate evolutionary pathway, accounting for its many unique traits.

^ The floating raft method of germination, recommended for those slightly trickier seeds. Most growers testify to its effectiveness, and is perhaps only beaten by rockwool insulation germination techniques, which i'm yet to try.

^ Greenhouse sensations products. I'm not endorsing any one brand as such, you can even build your own self-watering pots at home, but I will say that they've got good customer service and do contribute to a number of chilli forums. The lower lying black reservoir is called a chilligrow and the larger green reservoir is called a duogrow. In the same shot you can see a number of overwintered juvenile Aji Lemon drops and unknown Aji plants.

^ A couple of unspecified Scotch Bonnet types that I purchased from the Birmingham rag market. I harvested the seeds and they've turned out to be viable. You've got to be careful taking seeds from shop bought peppers as sometimes the transportation might have knackered them, or they may be accidental crosses, which is fine if you want a surprise.

All of mine have started popping up now. Even got a jolokia showing itself.

7 x Jalapeño
7 x Cayenne
6 x Habanero
9 x Infinity
1x Bhut Jolokia (so far!)

Biggest germination yet, looking forward to the haul and chill sauce making. :)

• 38 x 24.5 x 19.5cm So a modest size.

I'm tempted as my house is generally quite cold and this would help with germinating and starting more plants

New to this!

Hi guys,
The girlfriend bought me some chillies in pots for Valentines, as you can see below!
BHiWEEh.jpg

At the moment, I'm keeping them watered and on a sunny windowsill. Today I gave them a bit of baby bio for tomatoes mixed in with the water.
I've never tried to grow anything before so I'll be reading up on how to look after them properly and try and get some decent chillies! :D

Cheers,
Rick

Not having much luck germinating these seeds so far. I put them straight into the peat pods, but only 1 has germinated so have now tried putting them in folded kitchen roll which I have had good results from in the past.

If that fails I only have like 2 seeds of each left... Might have to get one of those heated propagators from Aldi and do it properly.

EDIT: Anyone ever bought some compost from Aldi? £2.50 for 40 litres doesn't seem bad value if its any good.

Gah, thanks for the warning, i'll give that a miss then. Might be from the same company that makes Wilkos own brand stuff as that was rubbish as well. Can you recommend something? I think I just got a couple of growbags last time I grew chillis, but can't remember what brand they were now.
