2015 Chilli Growers Thread

Couldn't decide between the ring of fire or the Chile de árbol. Both sounded good and pretty similar. Decided on the ring of fire purely due to the description saying they are easy to grow. Hopefully they dry well for making chilli flakes and powder.

Are the ancho's easy to grow?

There are lots of Ancho types, and I have grown Poblano only so far. The general problem with chillies in the UK is that we don't have enough heat for a long enough period. If you try growing Capsicum chinense or Capsicum pubescens strains you will need to be prepared for the fact that these are often the most demanding in terms of long seasons, and many will not ripen in time.

Ancho's are Capsicum annuum, and should be easy to grow.

This video shows some Ancho Poblano, and methods that this gardener used to grown them (in California!):

Thanks i'll give that a watch when I get a chance. Quite looking forward to growing some chillis this year!

I got my Nardello and bell peppers sown last night. I'm going to have to pop to town today as I seem to have lost my Cayenne and Scotch Bonnet seeds

I see people are already way ahead of me :)

Are you still up for sending any seeds out? :)
Am going to get the AeroGarden on the go shortly, but have only got lameo generic chill seeds.

These will be posted today.. thanks for the offer to pay but it's not needed. Just try and grow some plants and maybe post the results up here, if all goes well :)

The CAP 253c is rare! I looked and couldn't locate seeds anywhere, and I looked at loads of sites. So spread the seeds maaaan.

I'm using RootRiot once seedlings hatch, as the cubes have all the beneficial bacteria and fungi needed in the early stages.

Plants use fungi to optimise the uptake of nutrients/water from the roots. I combine this with Plant Magic Granules used when potting up. Costly but organic and you can see the difference in the roots when potting up, they have a symbiosis with the fungi and they appear more like mycelia (white/fine/hairs).

Once purchased this stuff lasts ages and can be used for all plants I think.

I want to get the Fungi Perfecti MycoGrow when I next needs some. Cheaper, but needs importing from US:

If your tap water is even slightly toxic, or you're not using good quality organic soils, PM Granules or MycoGrow might be a waste of time. It's easy to kill off the good fungi/bacteria with chemicals. I spent a lot on ingredients to make my own organic compost and this should combine well with the myco stuff. But I need a big butt to collect rainwater!

Have you tried growing any mushrooms? I know you can buy kits and just get spores in syringes but still a little unsure. I will try it soon though, would imagine its very rewarding growing your own mushrooms.

No, not yet, but I was looking at the options and I quite fancied the Shiitake plugs. I don't have anywhere to grow them in logs but my Dad does and I'm going to get him some.

Got my seeds from uk chilli seeds and they have kindly added a pack of Chinese Bullet chilli seeds. I can't seem to find them on their website, or find much info about them so not sure what I'll use them for. From what i have found they are medium hot with citrus notes..

Ive found some 22mm peat plugs so will get these sown today.

I've got seeds that have genimated coming out my ears! Those CAP253c's you sent me Herman Gelmet - all 6 of them have shot up already and need decanting to small pots now.

Using the heat from my VM superhub to heat the peat plugs inside a plastic container. Currently around 27c inside the box so it seems to be doing a good job.

Seeds turned up today, thanks a lot for that!
Will be getting them planted up this week. :)

Will post results up here. Will be good to have sent different things growing.

How long should I be waiting for Bhuts to germinate? I've got Infinity Chinese, Habs and Cayennes all shooting up but nothing from the Bhuts. :(

Mine last year took about 3 weeks to germinate.

Planted mine about a week ago.
This year, I'm trying Kashmiri Mirch (brilliant in curries), Scotch Bonnet Orange, Jalapeno Chichimeca, New Mexico and California Wonder Sweet Pepper. I've also planted some of the mystery seeds I got from http://www.ukchilliseeds.co.uk/. The writing on the packet is difficult to read but I think they may be Guntur Sannam - I'll give them a bash anyway. I've also planted some Naga Bhut Jolokia for a mate.

I overwintered my big Habanero plant and my big Scotch Bonnet from last year. I don't really need them as I've planted the SB Orange and I have a freezer full of Habs from last year but, if they produce then, all the better. No sign of life yet but we'll wait and see.

I've got 3 Kashmiri Mirch and 1 New Mexico peeping through so far. Like last year, I'm germinating them in a propagator perched above my main Folding rig and the temperature inside the propagator is an almost perfect 30°C.

I'll need to get my light set up soon. I've moved chilli production to the back bedroom this year as the growlight annoyed me in the sitting room last year - good job I live alone and don't have anyone bitching about me reassigning rooms for growing chillis :p (actually, my cleaner is a bit bemused but, technically she's staff, so I don't have to care ;)).
