GTX 960 or R9 280 for 1440p

At 1440 I would want a card with 4gb of Vram personally, in case any other games come along that you want to play.
So I'd try and stretch to a 290 or but a second hand 290 for that sort of money from the MM

Your best bet is to grab a 290 in the members market with that money. If you must buy brand new then get a 280. I cannot not recommend a 960 for 1440p.

Nvidia are missing out on 960ti sku that would fit perfectly here, though they would likely charge £200 for it and make it out of your budget anyway.

He doesn't want the 285, its a cut down GPU with less Vram, the 280 is better, more powerful and its what he asked about.

ive seen the 285 beat the 280 in some benchmarks, i duno if thats drivers or some flakey results but yeh youd think the 280 would be better

It does if the Texture LOD isn't too demanding, like Maxwell it has Texture Compression and Tiling (Currently AMD's only GPU with it) but there is no substitute for a nice fat 384Bit Bus. :)

I'd be wanting a minimum of 3gb video memory at 1080P these days, never mind 1440P so out of those two I'd go for the 280 personally. :)

A 280 will edge a 960 at 1440p and allow slightly higher settings due to the extra memory. Also a 280 is also cheaper than the 960, most 960s are closer in price to a 280X.

However for 1440p a 290 is where I'd go as a minimum and is the best bang for buck card out there and holds it's own with very new games.

Avoid 2GB cards at 1440p. I really struggled with hitting the vram limit on my 680 at 1440p. I switched to a 3GB 780 and haven't hit the limit yet.

Given a 500W PSU and a £150 budget I would look for a second hand 280x/7970. If you want a new card then a 280 would be your best choice.
